fix or buy
we have a decision to make and I would love in put. We own a full sized gmc pick up. It is paid for but needs alot of work. Like transmission and poss engine. Cost will be around $3000. Our other option is to sell it as is and buy a used vehicle. we know we can sell it because where we live country boys love these big trucks and we have had several offers on it. We really like the truck and it seems like fixing it would be the cheaper route but the truck has not run in over a year and I am worried we will find other stuff wrong with it. At the same time a used vehicle could have problems also...so I am really thinking about having the truck towed to a mechanic that can give us a more definate quote. Here in Tn we also have to be cautious of flood cars being for sale now too.

I'd fix it...you never know what you'll get into buying another one that's used...could be even more trouble...and like you said, you've got to worry about flood vehicles now being sold now...jmo

Talk to your mechanic about the repairs-and warranty of said repairs, if any, and the cost...see if there's the possibility of a payment plan...Wife to DH

Depending on what the problem is, putting on a rebuilt tranny might be cheaper than opening the existing one for repair.
Call the mechanic first - tranny and engine work are often specialized and some general mechanics don't do that kind of work. AAMCO is a national chain for tranny repair. They have their warrantee information online and often have coupons too.
Good luck!

How old is it, and what's is it's KBB.COM private party value based on its current condition and mileage?

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

We were just in the same boat. Our car needed too many repairs. We got a decent price to trade ours in; so we got a newer one. When a car gets older and starts needing repairs and you fix one; more seem to keep popping up.
