The way I read the article, salt would be limited in the preparation of the food. You could add salt at the table. With so many healthy and flavorful options to season a dish besides salt, I think the more creative chefs will do just fine.I am grateful that I do not have a salt addiction, have seen so many salt their food without even tasting it first. I believe that you may overeat, or eat unhealthy foods to your hearts content.(This has made us an excellent income, treating those with that attitude. ) Just do not expect me to PAY for health problems related to those poor choices. Bear the burden on your own.If that is the case.... salt away. ChaChing.

I think the gov't should stay out of my food--both in restaurants and at home. Once they start controlling what a chef can do with a dish, they will control more....and more.....and more.....

I am kind of a foodie, and would be upset if my fave splurge restaurants had bland, unsalted food, anyway.

Next thing you know....'they' will control how much and how often you are allowed to buy salt for your house. Or fat. Or sugar.

If you limit or halt what someone else does (outside of serious crimes), they will eventually come up with the idea to halt or limit something YOU care about.

But I'm not sure I see how there was no way to be responsible. Most grocery stores sell rotisserie chicken and roasted vegetables in their deli sections that you can take out. Subway has many good choices on their menu. If you know you're going to a fast food restaurant, you can look up their nutritional data online BEFORE you go...that way you'll know beforehand what the best choices are. And you can refuse to patronize places who don't post nutritional data on their menu, being sure to write their corporate offices and let them know that. That said, many restaurants do put nutritional data on their menus and just as many people ignore it. Should the restaurant owner still be penalized?
It was rather late when we realized we were hungry and the store departments were closed. The hot pre-made stuff in the store was all rather old and unappetizing. It doesn't have nutritional information on it either, so still no capability to exercise responsibility about the nutritional content of hot food.

We're making a concerted effort not to go to fast foods, as it is too easy to slip into that habit for us again. Most of the non-fast food establishments out here are small independent restaurants. I don't think any place in town has nutritional information on their point-of-order menus - we would have gone hungry.

Yes, there is a Subway, but how is telling us to only go to Subway any different than forbidding restaurants from adding salt (or trans fats or requiring disclosure of allergen foods such as peanuts) during food preparation? We wanted hot food anyway.

Well, some things would be close to impossible to make. You need some salt in a bread recipe - salt controls the action of the yeast and also helps foster the development of the gluten. Foods taste flat without some salt. That being said, there clearly is too much sodium in food. I put most prepared foods back on the shelf because a single serving has more sodium than my husband can have all day.

The bill as stated is ridiculous and won't pass. It would kill the restaurant industry in NY. Will there be some regulation? Perhaps. I cannot quite imagine how they would regulate/inspect. I imagine it will be more of a provide information on the level of sodium thing in the end.

That is almost exactly what I said to Old Man when I heard it on the news... "Good luck making bread without salt"

I do not use salt in my cooking, other than what is absolutely -needed- in a recipe. I avoid using it all together when I can and cook 99% from scratch so I know what is in my food.

"They" banned trans-fats, limiting the oil selections... "they" want to pass a bill that will limit what foods can be made and sold... "they" are OUR employees.

I am short, fat and funny looking -- I don't use salt, I don't eat fried food, I don't eat meat, I don't drink, I don't use drugs..... Because I CHOOSE not do these things, not because someone has deemed it wrong and therefore illegal.

well considering i love salt and have LOW blood pressure
i would be sad - and i would probably bring my own shaker because i cant eat alot of foods without at least a little salt.

a low salt /low fat/ low sugar area of a menu is fine
but why make those who dont have a issue with salt suffer .

that would be like refusing to serve any sodas or desserts or sugar for coffee or tea because of diabetes - ( hmm actually caffiene gives me palpatations and really isnt good for you so lets ban that too LOL !)

not everyone has diabetes / high BP

people need to be adult and be aware of their own individual dietary issues related to medical issues and be responsible for themselves .

i have a slew of things i cannot eat due to my IBS and latex allergy ( which rules out eatimg a ton of fruits ) - i just avoid what i know i cant have .

So true. I just got my blood tests back and mine is well within the safe boundary. I don't see why I have to give up a good meal out for those who over indulge on a regular basis.

I wasn't saying you should only go to Subway, just pointing out that it's a relatively healthy alternative. The point is that there are always options, even though they might not be the ones we would prefer at a given point in time. We each make the choices we feel are best for us at the time and we each are responsible for the choices we make.

I know what you mean about it being easy to slip back into the fast food habit.....it's something I struggle with even though I feel 1000% better when I stay away from fast foods! I may be wrong about this, but I think all fast food establishments are required to have the nutritional information available but you might have to ask to see it. If you really want to see it, ask them.

When are they going to outlaw soy? I'm allergic to soy and it's in practically EVERYTHING!
