10-brands-that-may-disappear-in-2011: Personal Finance News from Yahoo! Finance

24/7 Wall St. has created a new list of brands that may disappear, which includes ----
Readers Digest, Kia Motors, Dollar Thrifty, Zale , Blockbuster , T-Mobile, BP Plc , RadioShack , Merrill Lynch and Moody's.

I found this on yahoo this morning and thought it was a interesting read.

Our blockbuster was open one day (business as usual) the next day the sign said closed and the door as a closed permanently for business ( return you videos in the slot by due date or you will be charged) Total surprise to everyone ( expect maybe the employees)
We had just rented a came out that week new release from them. We had no idea they were going to go. They had been voted the best movie rental in the area 7 plus years.

I'm surprised that BlockBuster HASN'T already gone out. My ex had a membership there and this is no exaggeration--nearly 80% of the DVDs we rented had been scratched and unplayable. Its also EXPENSIVE. I don't want to pay that freaking much for a video when 8 out of 10 times it skips and is all messed up. I never did get to see the end of Trailer Park of Terror, lol.

The types of movies I most enjoy are usually documentaries, and can be found free at a ton of online sites. My BlockBuster has completely gotten rid of its documentary section. So yeah...when you're already competing against companies that offer cheap movies delivered to the customer, they'd at least try to step up the quality of the brick and mortar business...

I'm also not surprised with Radio Shack. The radio shack here is so overpriced, has very little inventory, and is staffed by the most electronically illiterate people in the world, lol.

And as for BP...yeah, I've been saying that since the oil spill first happened.

There's a few that I'm holding out hope for. Reader's Digest is just an American staple, lol. I don't read it, but its nostalgic; I remember my grandparent's den full of Reader's Digest books, lol.

Hmm...BlockBuster. My husband was one of the supervisors that built many of the BlockBusters here in the NE. Hmm...That's a big loss for his construction company.

Not surprised either with Blockbuster, I mean Redbox is everywhere and so convenient and cheap, Netflix takes business away too.
Radio Shack, never a fan. Sorry for those losing jobs.

We don't use any of those co. w/ the possible exception of Radio Shack. Blockbuster always said my videos were late when they weren't. I think the staff was making a little extra cash that way. So good riddens to them.

A lot of these companies just haven't been able to keep up with their competition or the demands of the marketplace. They're still operating on business models that worked in the 70's or 80's.

Not surprised about Blockbuster, Radio Shack (I can't believe they've held on this long) or Zales. I am surprised about T-Mobile which is our cell phone company. I'd hate to see them go since we've been with them for years and I really like their customer service.

If T-Mobile merges with Sprint-Nextel, I am gone. I have been with T-Mobile since they were VoiceStream and PrimeCo before that. I HATE Sprint-Nextel.

I am glad I read this because we will be looking to upgrade our phones soon. I will probably shop cell phone providers now.

I'm sorry for all the people losing their jobs.

I, too, have never been a fan of Radio Shack.......they had crappy stuff and even cruddier customer service. Stopped going there when I heard they changed their policy on returns and how you get your money back. Had to use a credit card or it could take up to two weeks to get a refund.......yes, WITH CASH! Corporate cut the check.......

We just lost Hollywood Video........now Blkbuster will be number two!

I hate losing the competition in anything.......are we headed back to the 'company store'?........that is what WM makes me think of.

our neighborhood blockbuster went under a little over 6 months ago. I had only rented maybe 2 movies in the last 5 years so I'm not surprised.

I don't frequent any of those businesses so it won't affect me, but sad to see people losing jobs.
