What an interesting pair of brothers. I knew Aldi was started by 2 German brothers, but had no idea they were involved with Trader Joes. Thanks for sharing.

I knew that Aldi owned Trader Joe's but I had no idea that they bought it back in 1979. Trader Joe's started out in LA as Pronto's - it was a store that was on my way to school when I was in junior high. Mother went only there to buy cheese, because in those days, supermarkets had only packaged cheeses, nothing interesting. Plus, of course, other things that were never seen in a supermarket.

The store's name changed at sometime to Trader Joe's, I'm not sure when. I just know that when I went home to visit my parents, my last stop before heading to the airport was to TJ's to pick up things I could never find in Chicago. I was absolutely delighted when TJ's entered the Chicago market. Still am.
