Haven't bought heating oil in years. How long does a tank last? How big a tank? Just curious. Hubby's been doing some reading on some of this stuff and he said for you to be prepared cause it's not done going up by a long shot.

Not sure how much it is local but like everything else, it is not going down any, that is for sure. I have one son that heats with fuel oil and that will be interesting to hear how high it has gone up again. Son also has a pellet stove in his kitchen.

We were heating with propane, 500 gallons a year. Last price we paid 2 yrs ago, was $ 2.45 a gallon.
We finally got smart and changed over to a OWB, an outside wood boiler furnace in 2008. It is a lot cheaper for us to use wood. And this system also heats our hot water in the winter so a lower electric bill. I can keep the house at 75 plus versus 68 in past winters. We bought two 100 pound propane tanks and that is our fuel for out kitchen stove. One tank lasted 7.5 months and we are at 8.5 months for the second one now. One is hooked up, and when it goes empty, we just switch them, and take the empty one down to get it filled back up. About $ 70 for a fill up. Biggest tank a homeowner can legally transport and get filled.
We have 2 of the 20 pounders for our grill. I take advantage of a summer special to get them filled for $ 10 each.

My husband's Dad got a OWB also after seeing ours. He was using 6 tanks a year of fuel oil. Each tank holds 275 gallons. He just could not afford it anymore.

We just refused to be held hostage by any fuel company any longer. No way to control the prices increases. We had a different option and we took it.

when I was married we burned wood as our main heating source, I would LOVE to go back to wood. Maybe in a year or two when I can afford a stove. Pellets wouldn't work for me, I don't have any place to store then and how heavy are the bags? I really dont' see myself lugging them around.

anyway, last year I used 536 gallons, which from what I'm hearing is pretty awesome. Keep in mind I'm out of the house most of the day. I hope to use even less this year because I insulated my attic this past spring where I went the entire winter with NO insulation at all in my attic.

And I have two 275 gallon tanks. One is active. I just called yesterday to find out whats up with my second tank. I don't know if the previous owner just shut it off or if there is a problem. My oil guy said I'd get a discount if I were to get a bulk delivery. So I hope to get that up and running by the end of September. That'd be great if I could get by on 500 gallons a year, one delivery.

And I ended up paying $2.69 yesterday with a discount for paying within 10 days.

We use propane. Our company usually has the prepay due in Sept. It was due really early this year but the price was locked in at at $1.48 a lb. I am so grateful we have the prepay option so I know it is all set for next winter
