Default whooping cough is making it's rounds

I guess this is on the rise this year. Every 5 years we seem to have a outbreak of it. 5 cases found near my daughters home..Adults can get it to.

Advair is good for bad coughing. Also, the non-norvasc type of BP drug in Azor (the whole class of such drugs) can cause bad coughing. By bad cough I mean coughing to the point of vomiting and/or loss of consciousness with airway restriction that makes it difficult to breath after the coughing. By difficult to breath I mean that it takes active hard work to breath enough air.

It's starting to resurge, there are always several cases of it here in Iowa.

Not trying to scare anyone...but when my oldest daughter was 8 months old, she nearly died from this. It came on very quickly..she woke up from a nap & started coughing/whooping...on the way to the ER, I had to give her mouth-to-mouth as my FIL drove ,b/c she stopped breathing a couple of times. Ours was probably an isolated event, but I strongly urge you to ask your doctor to prescribe some medicine so that you may have it on hand just in case your child comes down with it.

I've heard it came in with illegals from Mexico. Started mainly in CA, but is spreading due to vacations and other travel.

Kids get the vaccine (it's the 'P' for 'pertussis', in a DPT shot) while they are babies---providing the parents aren't against vaccinating.

But it wears off. Kids who are older are being vaccinated now, before school starts, and adults should get another one. I'm thinking about getting it again. I'm gonna ask the doc when we go home to Ohio. I have asthma and chronic bronchitis and don't need to give respiratory diseases a chance to find a foothold.

When I was a nurse in an office, we used to vaccinate against that, starting at 3 mos. When do they do it now? I'm glad she was OK.

I believe its now 2 months...& she had her shots all up to date when she came down w/it. She must have built up an immunity after getting it b/c she never caught again, thankfully. My 2 older boys came down with it when they were 18m -2yrs old, but it wasn't as bad as dd's case...& again, my boys were up to date on their shots, yet they still caught it....but never again since then. I'm scratching my head on this one. None of my other children has ever caught it.

They are vaccinated--it's in with the TDAP vaccine. Moo has had at least three doses now. They had me get an updated booster to help protect her--either while pregnant or at the hospital after delivering, I can't remember which. They also advised me to try and minimize her exposure to large crowds until she could receive her vaccinations.

Health 101: The DTaP Vaccine & Tdap Vaccines: What are the recommend DTaP and Tdap vaccine schedules? This talks about the vaccination schedule for kids.

Yeah they are saying if your a adult chances are you need a shot. Last one was when we were kids. It's really bad for kids when they have underlying problems like asthma and disabled.

It was pretty much gone, but people stopped vaccinating against it...not all, but enough...so it's coming back.

My mom saw the ad campaign for the shots on the news the other day, and immediately called my son's pediatrician. He's already vaccinated, and my nephew just got his booster a few days ago since he's entering 7th grade. It was recommended by the pediatrician that mom and I, as my son's primary caregivers, get a booster as well, though.
