Texting - I feel like a kid/teenager passing notes - my observation
We ( my family) has just now entered the realm of texting.
In a effort to reduce phone service bills and to give our teenager a cell phone. We changed our plan for home and cell. We can now text and as much as we want (unlimited). So now we send notes instead of calling each other.
I feel like a child/teenager at school. We were allowed to pass notes in high school and there wasn't much time or space during the passing periods to talk so you wrote notes during class to friends and boyfriends etc and passed them during passing periods.
That is just what texting feels like.
A short note here some info there. Note passing

I love texting and I'm one of those people that carries my cell to whatever room I'm in.
It can be funny with family though. Instead of me yelling downstairs for my daughter to throw my clothes in the dryer, turn the music down, or make sure the door is locked, etc, I just sit upstairs and text her that.
Plus, I hate talking on the phone! It makes life so much easier to send a message without having to talk to that person.
I'd say you are progressing.

i love texting because it saves so much time .
and i can get a message that my 18 yo or 22 yo are sleeping at a friends without being woke up or waking up wondering where they are - they text me.
you can foregos alot of polite formalities also
text to a friend - are you okay with driving girls to movie and me bring home - her -- OK
saves all the hey how are you - thank yous etc blah blah blah that neither of us has the time for when at work and lets us get right to the point without feeling bad or rude( forme to call and skip the hi how are you suff would feel rude )
i dont actually talk any less to people i text but i can communicate more often with less stress .
also is great when kids are at noisy places etc and you cant hear anything if you call.*~Debbi~*

One thing I DO miss from about 2 1/2 years ago is the what we called the beep beep. Walkie Talkie part of Nextel.Bank of America is THE godfather of Hell with Wells Fargo running neck and neck. When the world ends the only things that will be left are cockroaches, Walmart, Wells Fargo and Bank of America. Not necessarily in that order. The order remains to be seen.

One function Nextel has is being able to use like a Walkie Talkie. Locate who you want in your address book and if they have Nextel also you push side button and "beep" them and they come on..instead of dialing or texting...push button to talk...let up when done...rinse and repeat...loved that function.

Oh I remember those Nextel users and that function.
Did they go out of business?

No, but they aren't the God of cell phones anymore. They had the monopoly on the beep beep. Don't think they have the monopoly anymore.

I'd say it's progress

I was never one to text either... but within the last few months, I've really gotten the 'hang of it'... quick and easy!

The one thing I've noticed since entering the world of texting, my 16 year old can't spell anymore. When he writes me a note at home or I see him typing on the computer everything is "text abbreviated lingo."
When I ask him about this, his response is "it's ok mom, the computer will fix it for me." (sigh). I try to tell he still needs to know how to spell!"We fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen; For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."

LOL
My son was texting for the first time, telling others he now had a phone and could receive texts.
He said "I wonder how I should spell phone?"
I looked puzzled
He said "You can spell wrong on texts you know"
We had a discussion about why text started to be spelled txt and love luv and you u. It was back when you paid per letter for texts. So there is really spelling and txt( text) approved spelling you aren't just suppose to decide how you want to spell something."Everyday as your walking down the street, everybody that you met has an original point of view" -Arthur PBS

I phone. I dislike that, so I keep it short, brief and to the point.Texting is fine for others, not for me.
