    Default Whales!

DW and I don't go in for fancy vacations, but this week we took a two-day cruise up the west coast of Vancouver Island. It is a really neat trip on a converted WWII minesweeper that takes passengers on its regular freight run to fish farms, logging camps and isolated communities on the outer coast. The scenery is some of the most gorgeous in the world.

The route stays mostly in the protected waters of the fjords and inlets that line the coast. However, for a couple of hours, it is out on the open ocean, staying about a mile offshore. The boat was rockin' and rollin', but we had a great time. Here is me on deck:

Note the angle of the railing against the horizon!

Out on the open water, we encountered about ten humpback whales, in small groups. One group included a baby, though I wasn't able to get a photo of it.

    Very cool!

How beautiful and I bet that was so enjoyable.

You reminded me that I need to watch the season finale of Whale Wars.

    Beautiful! Love seeing wildlife.

You live in a beautiful area.......love the Victoria and Vancouver area. (but San Juan Islands are pretty too)

I always wanted to take a trip on a Freighter but when I checked them out they are only slightly less $ than a cruise.

This cruise cost less than $500 (Cdn) for two people, including one night's accommodation at a B&B, and an evening meal on the boat. If you are ever on northern Vancouver Island, check it out.

What a nice trip that must have been! Last night I was doing some preliminary planning for a mini-vacation at Depoe Bay - I understand it's a good place for whale watching too.

Whales are one thing I want to see before I, shall we say, go...Bad thing is I hate the water.
