I was so mad, I cried
My DS had his 1st wedding anniversary yesterday. DH and I decided to get them a anniversary/wedding cake. Their wedding cake was suppose to be chocolate with fudge filling, it came poppy seed with buttercream frosting.
I called King Soopers, told them the entire story, and told her we needed this to be a very fancy cake, yellow frosting, flowing flowers down the sides.,another words decorated like a wedding cake,,,...and gave them the two weeks to get it done.
When Dh brought it home, i just came unglued. It was an 8 inch round cake with 6 yellow flowers around the top of the cake, in the middle she had written Happy 1st Anniversary,, in Black frosting!! I looked at DH and told him to throw it in the trash. I could not beleive it was written in black. DH took it back, they took off all the writting & flowers and put roses and beading all over it. They replaced the writting with green to match the leaves. They only had 20 minutes to fix it. You could see where they scraped off the frosing and the light yellow roses are now bright yellow with bright green leaves.
The assist manager fixed it, saying that the manager was the one who decorated it this morning.
We feel bad that the cake looked so bad, and and was nothing like they wanted. I guess the good part was it wasnt freezer burnt like their anniversary cake they had in the freezer. It looked like crap but tasted pretty good.
Thanks for letting me vent, It feels alittle better to get it out.Pine trees, with their needles pointing up to heaven, represent everlasting light and life.

Definitely a refund. They didn't do their job. Hmm...maybe, without seeing the work order the person wrote it wrong. Either way a refund. And if I were the manager, to keep a customer happy and singing my stores praises, either a corrected cake or a gift certificate...customers choice.

man that does suck! Who would think writing Happy Anniversary in black was acceptable?
At least you learned where NOT to buy another cake.

~I'm sorry that happened! But I can give you the perspective of someone who has worked in a bakery....2 weeks is not enough time to order the kind of cake you're talking about. Decorating takes time and that needs to be planned in to all the other cakes that have been ordered farther in advance. We took orders like that at least 6 weeks in advance. Wedding cakes were 3-9 months in advance. And they were never, ever ordered over the phone. When you talk to someone over the phone you generally are talking to the "counter girl" not the decorator. I was a counter girl with some decorating privileges and I messed up a few orders myself. They just fill out a simple paper order form based on what you say and it's up to the decorator to interpret whatever she wrote. The order taker is rarely available to interpret the form to the decorator when the decorator is working.
The best way to order a cake is to go early in person, speak to the decorator and bring some picture examples of what you have in mind. If the cake itself was good I'd give the bakery another chance. Counter girls come and go by the month, I know.....~~Constance

actually i also worked in a bakery(wegmans) 2 weeks is more than enough.. it was a fancy cake,, not an actual wedding cake.. we did this all the time and had a full staff..our cut off was 3 days.. the cakes are frozen, yes frozen and filled the nite before( i help as i was in breads)..
its the decorating that took a long time and it was never done in advance, just the day of pick up..
she only wanted a simple cake to look like a wedding cake, if it was a problem she should have been told so..
and black writing is unacceptable unless ordered..car loan 12/2006 14,687.93

First, sorry this happened to you. But I would never trust a grocery store/Sams club etc. to do the job. I always go to a bakery and order in person. It isn't a wedding cake but I would buy something small in that flavor and taste it. This is not to say it couldn't still get messed up but you get what you pay for.

I am going to try and post the picture of the cake I ordered off their website, and the one we actually got. that way you can see what I'm talking about.
The only thing we changed was the color, and I talked to her for over a half an hour to make sure we were both on the same page.Pine trees, with their needles pointing up to heaven, represent everlasting light and life.

Get a refund or do a chargeback. I certainly wouldn't have thrown a perfectly edible cake in the trash.

Ugh. I hate when that happens. I think what you order doesn't always translate to some people.
I ordered a cake for a bridal shower once that was sooooo ugly. Just terrible. Lucky it was only a shower and they fixed it a little for me.______

Just think, somewhere out there is someone with a chocolate fudge cake saying "WTF? We ordered poppyseed."
