Default How to Remove Food Smell from Jars

I have been saving jars to use for Christmas goodies, but I have hesitated to use them because I could never get the smell out. You know, like pickles, etc.

Anyway, I came across this article, which talked about something I had never heard before-coating the lids. I knew the smell was from the lids, but couldn't get it out no matter how I washed them. And didn't really want to use my canning lids (if they fit).

I'm not sure I will do this, but I will certainly file it away. It's good to know. How to Remove Food Smell from Jars | eHow.com

I understand the idea behind it but I use a thick layer of plastic wrap over top of the opening and secure it with an elastic. Not practical for shipping and travel I know but so far its worked.

I wonder if you can soak or boil the lids in a baking soda water mixture? OR let a bunch of baking soda sit in the lid to absorb the odour? I used to scrunch up newsprint and place in the jar with the lid on. The smell would go away enough til it smelled like whatever I filled it.

I put a table spoon or more (depending on the size) of baking soda in the jar and put the lid on it.. It stays in there till I am ready to use the jar.. Has worked for me..

I use bleach and water. Fill up the jar and the lid, let it sit for a few hours then wash in hot soapy water and rinse real good. Works every time.
