Pennhurst State School
Tonight is the opening of a haunted asylum in our area. According to local legend it truly is haunted. There is a movement to turn Pennhurst into a museum, to teach of the horrors of the past so it never be repeated. I thought it was interesting enough to share.

I'm not much for scary things FW. I know some people really like that kind of stuff, but I just don't like to be scared. I don't even like roller coasters. I once saw part of Halloween or Friday the 13th, I don't know which, and had nightmares for well over a decade. I'm far more chicken then you.
I kind of thought it was interesting. There's a lot of debate about it around here. Many of the people who live around here worked there and there are many here who lived there.
DH's Grandmother was a supervisor there. She talked all the time about her kids. She loved them so much. There's a veteran's hospital up there now and the military uses part of it as a base, but that's kind of hush, hush. Lots of military floating in and out of here.~~~

I saw something on the news today about it. They had a woman who was there from age 7 to age 23. She wanted it to be turned into some type of housing. I think a museum would be a good idea.
Don't think I will be going to the haunted house though. I don't enjoy being scared!

shoiji,
Yes, I know who you mean. She was one of DH Grandmother's kids. I've given her rides home lots of times. She always seems to be at the store the same time I am. She's a nice lady.~~~

We are SE Above Philly/Valley Forge area, below Lancaster. We live in a really nice area, close enough to the city & the Jersey shore, far enough up to be in farmland. Expensive area though, really expensive. Property taxes are a real killer. My old neighbor paid so much in property taxes each year that she could have rented a 1 bedroom apartment! and apartment prices are high out here, they start around a $1000 for the smallest of places. Her home wasn't much to speak of either, just a nice regular house on a postage stamp of ground. The township/borough line is in the middle of our street, and just two homes down it divides again. We happen to fall into the borough where the taxes are less then our neighbors pay.
I really like the area though. I'm close to family & friends, although I saw some land out in Montana the other day, and I could not help but want to pick up stakes and go. It looked so incredibly peaceful, no neighbors for miles. We chose our property here because it's on a quiet country road outside of town. We'd have to go quite someways to have no neighbors to be seen. I expect this is where we'll stay till we die, but it's nice to dream. LOL!~~~

Polly I know the Valley Forge area. We bike ride at the park all the time. We live in Montgomery Co. Understand the taxes. Ours are nuts also. I love the area where we live. We have a large Rancher so it would be nice to stay here for ever. We have no steps. Idea home to grow old in.

Charlotte, We live in Chester County. We have a small rancher on a little over an acre and a half of land. A corn field and farm house behind us, a farm house, barn and corn field in front of us. It's an old rancher, built 1952. It's a real fixer upper. We've lived here 12 years? somewhere around there.
When we were first married we lived in town. We lived in a slum lord apartment so we could save enough money for a down payment on a house out of town. This home is in a comfortable range for DH's pay scale. If we had bought a home that needed no work we would have had to stay in town. To live in our area in a home in perfect move in condition would have been 4X's what we paid. We are happy with the area (although sometimes we'd really like to be further out in the boonies) but, it's taking us forever to fix this fixer upper. Quite discouraging at times, but the house has great views, we don't have to worry about drug dealing neighbors, the taxes are much higher in town, it's all on one floor, washer and dryer on first floor, not the basement, so all in all, we are happy here. We also like that it's a great home to grow old in, ranchers really are the only way to go as you age.
The boys and I spent a lot of time in Valley Forge, we never rode bikes, but we would go to the church there (just beautiful) check out the log cabins and the cabin shop. Sometimes we just take a ride on the tour roads and go through again and again (before gas prices went through the roof) Feed the deer. It's always a nice day.~~~
