Moment at the Dumpster
Today i was driving my grandsons home,my daughter asked if i could stop and see if i can find any boxes. Most stores crush them now. Stopped behind biglots and few other stores but found none. So up head was krogers. I pulled up there was a frail old man digging in the dumpster. Of course my grandson looked at me and said nana why is he digging in the dumpster. In very short words i just said maybe he doesn't have any money to buy food and he might not have family to help.So i get out of the van walked up, but stopped about 12 feet infront of him,i didn't want to scare him. I said im just looking for boxes for my daughter. He says oh ok he looked to be in his 70's. I said oh don't stop looking, he says do you need a box of eggs they are still good,it was a huge box i bet at least 12 packs of the 24 each. Looked maybe like a few cracked and it was all messy. They sill had a shelf date of 9/30. I said oh No im good on eggs. I mean i would have taken them if it had been cooler weather and we didnt have a big recall on eggs.
I did say well you might want to be careful with the eggs.I asked if he knew there was a recal on eggs he said No he didn't know. He sat them aside. He pulled out a few boxes for me. Off to the side he had his pile of goodies. Big box of mixed veggies and fruits not bad looking at all. He had what looked to be some cottage cheese. Some oj.He offered me some of it and i said oh Im fine Thank you. I mean if it i was there and he didn't have himself a pile started i would have taken the fruits and veggies. Not big on DD for dairy and such. I think the one thing that really got me. I said oh you don't have to stop I use to Dumpster Dive to. He stopped looked at me and says Oh you don't have to do this any more. You are able to buy stuff instead of getting it out of the dumpster.I was a little lost for words. I said I still do once in awhile but i live so far out in the country i just don't get to town much. I didn't want him to feel like i thought i was better. But i got the boxes in the van and he got his box of stuff and walked away eating a green pepper. Just one of those moments a good lesson for my grandson. Has we drove away my GS watched the old man walk away and he said NANA does he have a home to live at? I said i don't know if he does. He said i bet he sure is hungry alot ,i said most likely. Then my grandson says out of the blue a few minutes later, i wonder if he knows who God is? I said i don't know he says nana maybe we need to invite him to church. I said maybe we should have. He says can we turn around and go back. The store was a few miles back .he said please nana. I said ok so i turned around to go back but he was gone already. So my grandson saids each time we drive by we have to check and see if he is here. I said ok. My grandson said you know nana there is a angel on every corner. I just felt my heart drop out of my chest this coming from a 6 year old.I said where did you hear he could have been a angel,he said my mom says you never know when God puts someone in your life for a reason and she said they might be a angel sent from God. All i could say was to tell him how very proud and very proud God was of him.If you want to live a happy life, tie it to a goal. Not to
people or things.

Mahalo for sharing - what a heartwarming experience for all of us.

I had a hard time finding boxes until I was shopping in a Dollar Tree store a few weeks ago and saw lots of nice, clean, medium and small boxes sitting around. When I asked if I could have some the cashier said I could have all I wanted as long as they were emptied.
Most of the stores either have locked dumpsters or they recycle the boxes back to where they came from and won't give you any.

Yes that's how it is here. Just in this last few years its been like that.I was able to find on craigslist tonight someone that had used a moving company and had 100's of heavy duty boxes. So hubby went on got them. These people used a moving company to move them 10 miles away

It is a shame that they would sooner throw a box away than let someone have one free and save money. The moving boxes are WAY too expen$ive. We should have a rent-a-box company and as long as it is returned in good condition, it should be very very cheap.

The saddest thing about being a grown up is that we stop thinking like a child.
I wanna hug your grandson.

What a sweet story. Your grandson is very wise.

P.S. If you have a Bath and Body Works near you they almost always have boxes. Great for moving.
