400 + pounds of food for 86.00 .Happy bargain weekend
Hi all !
Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend. I have been canning , preserving and dehydrating tons of food from my garden and a produce auction the past few weeks to the tune of about 600 pounds.
But today was a fantastic day for me I got about:
150 pounds of apples
100 more pounds of tomatoes
60 pounds of squash
40 pounds of zucchini
10 pounds of mixed banana peppers, jalapeño, and serrano
carrots ( a peck)
potatos
English Walnuts
heriloom pumpkins ( cinderella )
and more....
for 86.00
I will be dehyrating, freezing and canning more I guess
Just thought I would share and see if anyone else had a fantastic weekend to share.
Have fun and happy bargain weekend all!*Angel*

Oh my ^%%^($)(@!!!!! Wow. I am definately not as enterprising as you are. I think I should be praising the ground you walk on. That is great that you bought so much food for such a great price and are storing it.

Wow that is fantastic. Where in the midwest are you. Im in Illinois and never seen a produce auction.

Hi Gottadance,
Where you are located I would look into a CSA share next year, you have some wonderful organic farmers etc, the farmers market up near Chicago, etc. I am not sure if you can buy straight from the terminal I don't believe so. I will see if I can find you some more resources up there. I am doing a huge buy next year ( God willing ) and already have people in on if you would like to take part in that I would be glad to help you get the amount you need.
On to your question:
A produce auction is a market outlet for locally produced wholesale products. Fresh produce, as well as a variety of other agricultural products, are offered for sale to the highest bidder. Most of the people attending are wholesale accounts for Restaurants, vendors, some individuals and whatever chains might participate etc. It is all local, of good quality and marked USDA regulation of number 1's or 2's. Most being number 1's. Most are in very big lots and a few smalls. This is the end of the season though so might have been the last, they don't know until they see who might have anything left to sell. It is very clean and and has a loading dock available for commercial use.
I would have gotten more but already have so much to process and my garden is still producing
luckily.
On a different note: I have not seen anymore beets and if so not in a large amount. There might be one more not sure, if so I can look for you, we can pm for details, but would have to meet up in order for you to pick up produce.

Thanks! I do already belong to a CSA in Naperville, but the only thing is that you just get whatever they produce/does well. I've had one beet so far! That's not enough for a beet lover like me!

Well, if I have to, I'll get them at Whole Foods. Not frugal, but organic and very fresh.Goals:

Well angel, you sure got your work cut out for you, but WOW! what a stash. I can't imagine how pretty that's all going to look in your pantry this winter.
I've heard about food auctions, but never really went out of my way to find one. After reading your post, I think I need to.
Enjoy your bounty!
