Default Thank God for Baking Soda!

Well I decided to make a big pot of macaroni and cheese. It turned out well. Used both cheddar and philadelphia cream cheese.

I ended up using my wok to make the cheese sauce. It is big and could hold the sauce and noodles.

I cleaned out the wok and put it on the burner to season it. I forgot it was on the burner and when I turned around I saw there were flames coming up around the wok. So I immediately take the wok off the burner. I see there is a flame going. Not good since I have an electric stove. I first try to blow it out but see it is still burning really strong. Then I hear myself saying baking soda. All I could think of was the commercials from when I was a child seeing someone using baking soda to put out a fire. I grabed the baking soda and dumped it on the fire. The flame went out immediately.
It looks like the sauce got on the burner and that was what was causing the fire.

So glad I had baking soda right there at the ready. I checked out the stove and everything looks ok. Anyone else use baking soda to put out a fire?

In the fire department, we use baking soda for chimney fires. We open the door of the wood stove, toss in a bag of baking soda and close the door. it puts out the fire in the stove right away, and usually knocks down the fire in the chimney.

Good thinking to use it on the stove!
