What's going on with FB?
I went on to check on how a sick family member was doing and what was on my FB page!!!!!
An ad soliciting women for pornography web cams on facebook! They wanted "models" There was no mistaking it was for x-rated content, they were very specific about the sexual nature that the models would be part of. Wowza! Really???
My underage child is on FB, is this crap coming up on his page too?~~~

The ads you see on your page vary depending on key words you have on your profile info or in your status updates. For example, I have the words "diabetic", conservative, and "class of 1991" on my info page. The ads I see are for diabetic supplies, vote for certain conservative candidates in my area, etc...DD has the words "comic books" and "senior 2011" on hers and she sees all kinds of ads for comic book sites, comic book stores and college info. The same trend follows true with my DH and DS's FB pages. DH sees ads geared towards thirty-something year old men and CPAs - hair loss, NFL, and continuing education courses for CPAs.
ETA: Not say you have the word "porn" on your FB page, I am sure that particular ad, like all of them, has several key words they pick up on.Last edited by Neeley; 10-25-2010 at 01:50 AM.

I think the child/minor's account shows proper ad's though - you did set up your child/minor as under the legal age limit? I can't vouch for sure but that would seem appropriate or else there'd be no minor's on that site.
BTW: DF set me up with firefox...it blocks all the ads. I have to click on a blocked section to view it specifically.2012: The Year Of The Purge!

DS told me the other day he got a invite to join a singles network. He is listed as under 18, I think I need to see about blocking ads.

Another thought is these innocent -looking posts your friends make like "You MUST see the shocking truth about Disney" or the new one "Cutest baby ever!!!". You click on it, and it unleashes all manner of virus crap you don't even know about AND infects any friends who click on it as well.
Now, having said that, I am constantly getting pop-ups to meet good looking single guys in their 30s from Jeffersonville, IN whose interests include camping and hiking!!! You must know that my idea of 'camping' is a Hampton Inn without an indoor pool! It's not porn - just a dating site - but I'm old enough to be these guys' MOTHER!!!

If he is getting invites, those are coming from friends or friends of friends. Blocking ads won't stop the "so and so invited you to join xyz" group (the ones that you receive a notification for in the top right corner of your page).

I didn't think much about it till now.
I looked to see if there is a way to stop receiving group invites. If there is a way to stop getting them all together, I cannot find it. You can choose to ignore all future invites from certain friends though. At least you could a few months ago - the last time I cleaned out all of my invites, applications, etc...Last edited by Neeley; 10-25-2010 at 08:58 AM.

Well, maybe invite is the wrong word. More of a pop up thing that happened after he played Farmville and then took one of those silly quizes. He pointed it out, I looked, seemed harmless, no slimly stuff, I just didn't think anything more of it until now.

If he is doing the quizzes then yes, I would definitely get some kind of ad blocker. The quizzes (Which of Santa's reindeer are you? What Nightmare on Elm Street Character are you? kind of thing) are notorious for having some kind of pop-up or redirecting your to an advertisement. Also, if he is answering quizzes, then every once in a while you may want to clear out his applications. Originally Posted by pollypurebred39

To clean them out...
*Go to the "Account" tab in the top right corner
*Click on "Privacy Settings"
*In the bottom left corner click on the "Edit Your Settings" in blue underneath the words "Applications and Websites"
*In the top section titled "Applications You Use" it will say "Remove Unwanted or Spammy Applications" Click that.
*The list you will see from there is all of the applications (Farmville, Games and all of the quizzes) he has done. Go through those and click on the X to the right of the ones you want to remove.
I don't clean out the ones I use on a regular basis (Farmville, Family Feud, etc...) You will be able to tell which applications he still uses and which he doesn't. It will have either "Last 24 hours, a specific date, or the words "Over six months ago" under each application to indicate the last time that particular app was used.
As long as those applications are still on his profile, he is subject to ads and/or pop-ups they generate. Also, until they are removed, the application can pull certain info of his.
I am notorious for taking the quizzes and have to clean mine out every few weeks. Not to mention, I do it to my kids' as well. Since they have to click the "Allow Application" in order to take the quizzes, every one of the quizzes/games/etc are listed. In going through the list of applications, I am able to make sure they are not taking quizzes I deem inappropriate and use it as an extra measure in keeping them safe on FB.
FB is such a fun thing, but can also be a little scary as a parent.DD (19)
