Thread: USA food, and not made in CHINA

Well, I would not purchase my baby formula if it were imported from China. I did buy two large packages of Pollock fillets that came from China for an upcoming party I am having. They were .60 lb and couldn't pass it up. I have eaten that type of fish from there before and have never had any problems. Then again, I don't eat fish that often. I see nothing wrong with paying attention to what you are buying and where it is coming from. I personally won't be buying any medications or food items from dollar stores as they aren't held to the same standards as other department stores.

I guess I better back up to my orginal question.
DO YOU READ LABELS ?
I do and I don't. It depends on my time, etc. I try to be a informed consumer. I am however really skittish with goods from China. They seem to make the news a lot.
Another of my concerns is the USA economy. If we can buy what we can local, then we support our farmers. The more money we pump back locally, the better we will be for it. Farmers have to buy feed, seeds, farm machinery, gas, etc, etc. It keeps a lot of people in business.

medicine......
I rarely use any myself.....
no aspirin ....
a TUMS maybe 1 tablet for the whole year.
I swear the hubby downs a bottle a week, or so it seems like.
and the ENT doctor did prescribe a nose spray but that is only rarely....if I need it at night, if I catch a cold, so I can use my sleep machine. If I don't get a solid good night sleep, goodness knows what a bear I can be ..............
I like Dollar Stores myself. Used to work in the Dollar Tree as a cashier, and currently have 2 DIL's who are both head managers in 2 different stores locally.Last edited by ladytoysdream; 10-26-2010 at 01:08 PM. Reason: more information

BUT...........just a curiosity question LTD.......were you more vigilant about reading labels because you were in a dollar store......and you know that they import a LOT of what they sell?
Are you as vigilant when at a super market? Or even another discount store......like Big Lots?
I think I am super vigilant about it when at one of the above mentioned stores..........and TRY to be the same at the groc. store but I will get in a hurry to get out of there and probably get sloppy with normal practices.
I am very firm on a couple things........only buy two brands of 'local' chicken..........and will NOT buy the farmed fish.
I DO buy Minute Maid OJ...........and the oranges have often come from Brazil..........we don't think about the fact that DDT hadn't been 'outlawed' in those countries like it has here........(if you are a DDT freak)............same goes for bananas.

Actually no, I was being lazy.
I just wanted the chocalate fix. And there I stood next to 2 other ladies and they were reading the labels. So I started to read the labels. And then the next row over...another lady I knew, was reading labels. I was beginning to think I was a slacker.
And lately I have had people buying OLD canning jars. Even ones with the wire bails so they can use the rubbers. They don't want to use the regular lids. Afraid of the BPA in them. I have a lady coming sometime real soon to buy 14 dz wire bail jars I have here on my deck waiting for her. I dragged them up out of a celler that belongs to a 90 yr old lady who gave up canning a few years ago. When people ask me to find something special....I go out looking.
Now me, I use the regular flat lids for canning. I figure the food is not touching the lid. I'm more safe eating my own food, anyway I can get processed

We have almost always read labels...but DH was a member of Greenpeace when I met him, 32 years ago, so we're old hippies and conservation nuts.
Yes, I read labels!

We always read labels.
We're less concerned with where the food comes from than with how far it has traveled. It doesn't make sense as we move into the era of peak oil to be shipping food halfway around the world. Why do we need fresh strawberries in January, imported from Chile or New Zealand or California? What's wrong with eating home-grown frozen berries, or other local fruit that stores well like apples?
But the main reason we read labels is to know the ingredients. We're vegan, so we like to know what is in what we are eating. You'd be surprised what they put milk or gelatin or other animal products into. Not to mention all the chemicals they add these days. The only way to find out is to read the ingredients list. (And yes, these days that means taking glasses to the grocery store!)

You have to read labels. Look at all of the problems there have been with lead and mercury.
