    Default Our Childhood Haunts

I was thinking today about places from my childhood that made an impact on who I am today. (See my newest blog entry: "Marian the Librarian" at glorybug.wordpress.com).

As you probably surmised, the library made a huge impact on my life. I began to recall the school libraries and public libraries where I used to wait for my mom to pick me up, and some of the books there that I still recall. I loved language, loved reading, loved losing myself in a book. If I had to just hang out somewhere, a library was an excellent choice for me!!

And what did I become? An English teacher, with a huge personal library, and a collection of dictionaries!!

Do you recall places from your childhood (either specific or perhaps a general genre) that you think influenced you to become who and what you are today?

Sorta glad I didn't like to hang out at say.... the dentist's....

As a child my parents took us to many different museums. Mostly in Europe. My first mummy scared the (%*^& out of me. So I saw lots of art work and statues that at the time could not possibly understand why the statues were considered such wonderful masterpieces. I was a kid and all I could think of was "where is the head?, where are the arms?, half the body is missing!!!! this is not a good statue it is broken!". This all changed when once again we were going to see a very famous statue in Italy. My youthful mind said, oh yea, another broken statue. So we go to Italy and walk in to see this gorgeous statue in the distance that you had to walk up to see. It was the Statue of David. I was around six years old and could not believe how beautiful and realistic it was. I could actually see the blood flowing through the veins.

So I am not carving marble however I do volunteer at a museum and am trying to get a body of work completed in ceramics. One thing I remember saying as a child when seeing paintings by masters is that one day I am going to do that. Only difference is that I am more into abstract painting. I enjoy the freedom of painting quickly and in the moment. With ceramics there is a degree of patience that I have to practice.

I spent a lot of time in the woods and fields behind my house growing up. We did a lot of walking/exploring...climbing trees, catching frogs, etc. I still love being outside and especially hiking. The picture is at Rainbow Falls in TN. It's 2.7 miles to the falls and you gain 1,500 ft. in elevation. It made me sick (long, stupid story) and I still want to go back and do it again. BF and I are at the bottom left of the pic.

The second is an older picture. We went to Turkey Run in Indiana right before I graduated Highschool. The place is awesome, and we went back about 5 times before we moved. The trails and caverns are like a mini-grand canyon. This is the place on one of the trails called "Punch Bowl"

The third is also Turkey Run, it gives you a good idea of how tall the cliffs are when you're down in the bottom trails.

As a child I spent many hours in the library's reference section researching about different places and things.
I ended up going to to school to become a health researcher.

Growing up my parents took us to a lot of places. Being a child who loved to read I asked a lot of questions. Which often got on peoples nerves but I loved learning and I still do. I also had a desire to help others especially kids that were different. God blessed me with 5 special blessings and I wouldn't trade them for anything.

Being a parent of special needs children I can relate to how many of these parent feel. When they go into a meeting the may feel overwhelmed. I am there to help. Perhaps just take notes and jot down question ideas that the families may not have thought to ask.

It also has been a wonderful experience as I serve in the children ministry through my church. I work with 5-12yr. My knowledge of facts I have picked up over the years comes in handy.
