I hear the Coyotes
And they are going crazy tonight. I love the sound of them and the dogs in the neighborhood are having a fit at the moment. It's been an all out war for the last ten minutes.
We have a big field behind our house and I love the wild life and trees. One thing I was happy about, was the housing slowed down as they planned to build houses behind us.
Now the other night I heard the turkeys, pretty much playing in my back yard and their sounds freak me out for some reason.

They are amazing creatures.
I look forward every fall to hear their packs, says Dances with Wolfs.

You won't think they are nice creatures, when you are out hunting, and end up in a tree sitting, waiting them out.
We do have one on our wall that I shot years ago, when we were hunting deer in the farmer's field next door.
They just did a story on the Syracuse NY news channel about coyotes in residental areas. People are not letting their kids play outside and have to supervise their pets when they go out.

They killed a woman here last year. They've been attacking people on walking trails and swiping pets off of doorsteps. I didn't let my kids outside this summer without an adult standing between them and the woods.

Wow...those are some extreme cases. We hear coyotes all the time...especially out camping. The coyotes we've seen have been quite timid and elusive. It's always been kind of cool to actually see one.
How much we enjoy what we have is more important than how much we have. Life is full of people who have more than they know what to do with, but cannot be content. It is the capacity to enjoy life that brings contentment.---Unknown

We hear them as well but they don't come close to the house. Our rottweiler keeps them away. I do love the sound of them though. I agree with the turkey noises...they freak me out too!

Well I don't plan on hunting anytime soon in my life so that's not a problem. Those are some extreme cases and nothing like that is going on here.
Hope I hear some more tonight!!

Palooka, love the dancing with wolves vibe. We do not have any coyotes that come down this far. An occasional bear is spotted, but mostly foxes & deer. They come right up to my back door since our Suki died. They have little fear of us, I think someone around here has been feeding them. Dumb, they are endangering their (the foxes) lives by encouraging such practices.
I hope you have another Dances with Wolves night.~~~

Palooka, i love to read that you enjoy hearing the sounds of the coyotes. I say this because the city i live in has started to hire people to trap and kill coyotes, for simply being in the way! I met a few women with an animal rights organization at a grocery store one weekend and have joined thier fight to get our city to stop killing them and find other peaceful ways to coexist with them. It anger's me to no end when people complain about coyotes in thier yard, well excuse me you have a house half way up the mountain in thier yard. I've joined them in going to city council meetings and speaking out, i think they are starting to get the message. Just starting,... I pray they stop someday... I would love to tell them i read a post from a woman talking about enjoying hearing them without using your name and location, if i may? I needed to see a post like this, thanks for putting it up.

I did some online research this morning after finding the second url in my post, in a NYS hunting and trapping magazine.
The New York Suburban Coyote Study
A copy and paste from this page -
"COYOTES AND PETS: Coyotes do not differentiate between domestic animals ("pets") and wild animals. Domestic cat remains are occasionally found in coyote scats (fecal material), but not as often as wild animals. Coyotes may attack or kill dogs. However, this is not for food as dog remains seldom are found in coyote scats. Most likely, domestic dogs are perceived as a competitor for resources within the coyote territory.
These types of interactions are a source of conflict between wild coyotes and people's pets and other domestic animals. Take preventative measures to protect pets from the "laws of nature." Allowing pets outdoors and unattended exposes them to the same risks that wild animals face. Keep domestic cats indoors, out of nature, to keep your pet(s) safe. Do not let small dogs outside unsupervised."

Just last week my son's friend was attacked by one when he was deer hunting. His parents went out looking for him and found him walking along the road thinking he was going the right way. I guess he was very confused but was not hurt real bad..he used a knife he ws carring to protect himself...was very scratch up...well be interesting to see how soon he goes back into the woods to deer hunt....my son was very upset and worried about him...

Rumor has it there is a family of skunks living behind the apartment complex I live in. Luckily haven't seen any. Not sure how I would like hearing coyotes especially if walking at night.

Where do you live that you hear coyotes? Plus, if attacked & lived-would you need the rabies shot?
