update on hubbys job search...need some advice
I posted about a job that hubby had an interview for and we thought he might get the job. Well we didnt hear anything for weeks and assumed he didnt get it. He put ot 13 more resumes. He did an interview at the liquor store which is excellent pay (govenrment job) but is only call in to start. Then this morning he got called back to the first job I had been talking about for a 2nd interview. So Hopefully that goes well.
Now here are the low downs on both those jobs:
Job 1, minimum wage pay which is $10.00 an hour now, will be full time at the moment, probably over time if things are still what they told him the first time until the store is opened (its a building supplies store), he has a chance to go full time when the store is opened, which will mean he will get benifits after 1 year.
Job 2 (Liquor Store) IF he gets called to do it... $16.95 an hour, but call in basis, may have to go to work in an hours notice, of a couple of hours notice, has to either be near a phone or have a phone iwth him all the time. After 400and something hours he will be in the Union. He can get benifits once he goes full time. He has a chance to go full time, and can apply on any full time jobs that come up within that store or other liquor stores, because its all the same district etc.
So we have been trying to weigh down wha the better decision is for us...
Right now here are our pros and cons type things ....
For job one, he gets the job right away and it is full time RIGHT NOW, but not sure once the store opens, right now it will be probably 12-14 hour shifts, most likely around 6 weeks, after that who knows once the store opens. Benifits after a year.
Job two is more pay, but call ins....which sucks, not regular hours. On the other hand its more pay so if he gets less shifts it COULD equal what he will make at job one for less shifts.
We also thought about what call in places do, once u get enough hours for EI u can get ei and call in the hours, that way ei will make up what u dont get if u dont have hours. Which will give him an opportunity to take that job and work towards full time.
EVERYONE who starts at the liquor store starts as a call in basis.
Liquor store got good benifits, as I said its a govenrment position. So that is major for us, but the benifits can be paid for before u are full time, or when u are full time u get them anyway either that or when u get in union, i am actually unsure exactly about that point.
MY husband has CONTROLLED epilepsy, my younges son takes Flovent and Ventolin for Asthma, my Oldest daughter takes Ventolin, Advair, Singulair and Nasonex for asthma/allergies. So benifits are a big thing for us.
So what do u all think?
He might never get offered the liquor store one, but IF he did have a choice I am wondering what u think.
I think that choice one is good for the NOW, but I prefer choice 2 because I think it has more chances to progress to full time, and the pay is better, along with the benifits.
But we have not decided yet, still working thorough the pros and cons.Kelly

Is the liquor commission an actual gov't dep't or a separate entity that is just owned by the gov't? Will the 400 hours get him in the regular gov't workers union, because that should give him access to internal positions and preference over external applicants for public positions.
Personally I would go liquor store, once he's in the union he's pretty safe. I don't know about the building supply store, lots could go wrong there, and no protection or room to go anywhere (although, if it's Kent, does it give him preference for other Irving jobs?)

Why not do both to begin with? Working for the LBS would be awesome once he gets past the call in phase, the benefits would be excellent for your family. In the meantime, the building store will offer regular hours, maybe do the liquor store thing evenings/weekends? Then once he starts getting regular hrs at the LBS, then could quit the other job and just work at the liquor store?

Plus it's with the provincial gov't, he could apply for inscope gov't jobs once he's in with the union! That would be another benefit in itself

I always tell my husband to take the job he is going to be most happy and most comfortable at. It doesn't matter what it pays if he is going to be unhappy and stressed out every night when he comes home. If he hates the work and the people and dreads going in then it's not worth the few extra bucks.
Don't bank on "could" or "if". Regular, stable hours that you can rely on count for more (IMO) than higher paying hours that may or may not come. What would you rather have next week:
30 hours at the hardware store= $300
?? hours at the liquor store= ?? possibly no paycheckUse it up, Wear it out,
Make it do, Or do without. ~unknown

Im not 100% sure on how the Liquore store works, its owned by the government and I know once he works the 400 and some odd hours he will be in the union and can apply on any full time positions that come up within that liquor store, or any other liquor store. And yes that would be internally done, because they do not hire fulltime off the street.
It is Kent, BUT I dont think there are any other jobs here with that company.Kelly

Its not possible for him to do both jobs, the Kent job will be a lot of hours for the initial 6 week period of setting up the store, possibly 12 hour shifts pretty much straight, that was what they said in his 1st interview (supposing nothing has changed), they plan to open store In Jan. BUT after that we are unsure, they just said that 70% of their employees are full time, so he would have a chance to get a full time position. Also they said that he is able to work overtime there.
The liquor store thing, they said he could have an hour or two notice to be to work, he would have to be near a phone or carry a phone with him at all times, and show up to work when needed.
They also said he could get a week with 5 hours and then could end up working 6-7 days straight.
After he gets the hours for EI he could apply and get EI calling in the hours he works, so it would help us that way, he would get income from tha while not working.Kelly

I have also told my husband that he needs to pick something he knows he will be happy doing. He doesnt know about either of the jobs yet.
The Kent job interview went well this morning, the man said he is recommending my hubby for hire, and that in the (however many years) he has been doing it they have never decclined a person they recommended. They also tried to get him an interview with the head guy today, but he was busy at the new store, so he will have to go back for another interview to talk with him.
I also agree you about the hours and money wise, any pay check right now is better then neither one. We are "not even" scraping by.
At this point he will take the first job offered to him. And had hoped that he would get offered that Kent one today.
There are pros and cons to each job.
I kind of have a feeling that he might not get offered the Liquor store job because we live about 45 mins from the Liquor store, tho they told him he should have an hour or more notice. I figure they may factor the distance we are into weather or not they hire him.Kelly

That's a toughie, maybe the hardware store, at least that way its stable hours, there's alot of risk with the lbs store as no garuanteed hrs etc.
In any event, I hope everything works out for the best for you guys
Trust your instincts.
P.S.
I have a son named Dalton too lol

Wait I am trying to wrap my head around a liquor owned or run by the government?

That's def not the US! LOL
MY vote is go with your gut instinct. If you are hurting badly for money take whatever pays, but if you can tought it out a bit I would take the chance on the better job. Good luck!!!Starve a bank... Pay cash.

Go wherever calls first, by the time (if) he hears from the other one he will have a better sense of whether or not the first one is worth sticking with.

Well, if they had the exclusive right to operate them then they could limit their numbers all they want. Although that is certainly not our government's intention, it's a great revenue stream; and I believe drinking beer is now our official national sport, so it's only natural that it's backed by government.

Phew, that's a toughie, but good luck with whatever choice.
Question about the liquor store. DOes he know the average time a person is oncall before making full time?It is what it is.
