kids and cavities
A year ago the kids got a check up with the dentist, NO cavities,
A few months later dh's employer changed ownership and the new owners increased the premiums on everything. The Dental insurance tripled and we had to cut it. Figured we get buy for a year or so since everyone was clear.
Fast forward to today, both kids now have cavities.
When I needed a 2,000 root canal I suffered and waited until I had the money. But my kids can NOT do that. I will NOT do that to them. What the heck am I going to do.
I'll tell you what I am going to do.
Three days ago my daughter came home with a flyer from school. IN January the Brevard Dental society is giving free dental care to kids without insurance. Just call and make an appointment with one of four locations. ALL FOR FREE. Great timing huh.
I sorta feel weird about it. It's not like I'm on welfare or unemployed. I feel like I'm taking something intended for someone worse off. I have never accepted anything like this before. They aren't asking about income or anything. They just said you can't have insurance and it has be a condition that needs treatment. In other-words it's not for cleanings or anything like that.
My pride is having a hard time with this but taking proper care of my kids isn't about my pride. It's about getting them what they need no matter how I have to do it.Sometimes I can't believe this is my life.

If they had intended for it to be just for low income folks they would have specified an income level. They're probably targeting folks just like you make too much to qualify for medicaid but aren't able to cover the cost of dental insurance plus out of pocket treatments.

Nishu you hit it. We aren't low income but we don't make enough to afford it. Like millions of American's we are in the black hole.

Murphy's Law has definitely struck your house. No guilt is necessary - you were honest about the work needed on your children and they are going to take care of them - just remember they are getting a tax deduction for the work so they will be paid something.

That is what the program is there for, you are right you cannot let your kids suffer, so I think its great that you can swallow your pride and get this done for them.

I wouldn't think twice about getting the work done. It is there to help the ones in your situation also.

I agree it's there to help people that can't afford dental insurance. you should not feel guilty about acceppting the dental care for your kids. I would take it so they wouldn't be in pain or before their situation worsens.
while dh's insurance is sucking us dry, I am grateful we have been able to keep it this long. by the time you pay for the insurance there is nothing left to pay for the bills insurance won't pay for. it sucks, but what can you do

When I did have the insurance it didn't do much for us. It paid for a cleaning once a year but fillings still cost me over 100 out of pocket and the root canal would still be well over 1,000. I felt like it was a rip off before they raised the premium forget about after.

Ann I think you are over thinking things. Didn't you just post about having to spend xmas money on warm clothing and being grateful you were able to do this?
If you do not have the insurance or the money to pay for dental care for your children then you should go to the clinic. If you do not qualify then they will tell you that when you get there. Healthcare facilities over these types of services because they know people need the help. They are more concerned about people getting the help they need. Right now your children come first. If you qualify you qualify. You do not want the cavity to become infected or worse need root canal work done.

Make use of the program offered. It is there for a reason.
And don't feel bad about it. There is a lot of other folks in the same type of situation also.
