But today I decided to watch the evening news. :yikes: oh :yikes: They said tens of thousands protest in Egypt over high food prices and unemployment. :yikes: It's crazy, tear gas, people bleeding, rocking cars, water canons, rubber bullets. Wow, scary. So glad I don't live in Egypt.
My worst fear happened there, NO INTERNET!!!!:yikes:
Updated 8:34 a.m.] Internet shut down across Egypt, interrupting Twitter and text communication among protest groups
oR CELL PHONES!
[Updated 1:25 p.m. (2025 in Egypt)] The Egyptian government has ordered cell phone companies to shut down service in selected areas, Vodafone says, adding that it is obliged by law to comply with the order.
They've shut down all communication throughout the country - no internet, no landlines and no cell phones.
If this happened in North America I shudder to think of the repurcussions to the financial situation alone. You would not be able to use your debit or credit cards, as they run off the internet. Unprepared people would be effectively penniless, no matter how much they had in the bank, adding to the fear and chaos.
Ya money would mean less, temporarily, anyhow wouldn't it? I am thinking food and supplies would be of more value during something like that. I shudder to think of it happening here. Ever.
our day is not coming dont be silly..its a good thing thats happening..how would like to live and not have freedom of speech,ect..plus their military refused to shoot their own people..
its a lot like us in the 1700's...they need a new goverment..the old one stole a lot of money.. their pres lived in swiss.(sp) and im sure his family stole a lot of money...can u image our president not living in the us..
Ummm, it's a lot like us right now. They are protesting no jobs, high prices, corrupt government, and they want the right to peacefully protest. Sounds a lot like what we are going through.
noway.. we have a freely elected goverment and what unrest? where? i dont see any..think 1970's and the resigntion of richard nixon.. that how we roll..
"all" they tried to do is get info on the other camp by breaking into the headquaters of the oposing political camp>> but i could be wrong.. i was quite young...
i dont get why everyone is so scared? i dont get it..i like to think like pres. roosevelt(sp).. during wwII..when we were really at war and would have really been in bad shape if we had lost.. nothing to fear but fear itself..sorry i dont have time to look up the actual quote.
i think of my parents and grandparents having to live thru/with jim crow and not being able tolive where they wanted despite have the means to do so.
i realize my life is not so bad and i can live thru anything..despite the fact im not working,,ill find a nother job until things pickup..
Society has always had the attitude,we will survive, things will get better. It is a changing world, and more and more folks are finding that things are not getting better, and lots more are losing what they had.Cost of living is getting higher along with Unemployment,so many jobs have been lost.Governments can feed folks all the BS for so long. The whole world is in trouble for sure!!!
They are attempting to overthrow a dictator who has been in power for 30 years. There really isn't much parallel between that and a country whose government has been peacefully ceding power every 4 years for over two centuries.
Now I can see why Polly doesn't watch the news!! I do and use it to direct what I do in my little life - gas prices are going to rise even more because of this situation. ...... need to make sure my gas never goes below half full more now than ever (our gas was $3.98 yesterday). Also need to adjust our very limited funds to retock our food pantry. And I make sure I vote in every election.
It is very scary to see what is happening there and this ytpe of mentality can spread easily. My heart goes out to the Americans trapped in the country now.
I'm with Mauimagic on this I'm not all dooms day but I do watch and pay close attention like I'm stock piling more and using coupons to maximize my savings and less eating out and really thinking hard do I want or need this I'm picking up extra shifts at work , getting every thing I can reduced or free.I would like to see things be stable and affordable but I'm not feeling that is going to happen any time soon. It will be interesting to see what transpires in the next few days for the US and Egypt. (on a side note) Gas prices have gone up here to 3.20 a gallon and oil is 3.69.
It isn't doomsday to face reality and anticipate things that may be coming. Doomsday is that day that you find you are not prepared and discover that you are effectively penniless, starving, and without shelter and knocking on MY door for help when the poop hits the fan.
Civil unrest doesn't have to mean police using fire hoses on groups of people. It's a mentality of grumbling and complaining that suddenly turns ugly. While I would not want to live under the reign of a dictatorship, and can understand why the people of Egypt are protesting, it's frightening to see what the government - any government - can do in retaliation to that. Cutting off communication and accessibility of funds has effectively paralyzed the civilians of that country.
You may think I'm nuts, but I prefer to think my eyes are wide open and I'm watching and waiting. I'm not afraid - I'm aware.
i agree daisygirl,,we have a whole lot of"stuff" we dont need to surive. i got made fun of all the time for never buying anything unless it was on sale or from a yard sale..but guess who is laughing now.. i am rich, i have a home to live in, food to eat,i can come and go as i please and communicate any way and with whom i like.
u see i started out life in the projects of the bronx, nyc and my parents had nothing..i mean we had food, clothing and stuff for the house but that was it.. i was taught how to make a meal out of nothing and shop to get the best value..there were no vactions ..we took day trips to the beach(jones) or parks(rye beach playland, the best) and brought food with us..
most people are crying because they cant take the fancy trip or buy the car they want..or go out to dinner..ect

This quote is about as insensitive as I've seen in some time.
There is a 9% unemployment rate in this country. People are losing their jobs, their benefits and their homes. Just today, our church helped out a family of five with NO FOOD. I talked to another lady today who confessed that sometimes they go without food and you have the audacity to claim that most people are crying because they can't take fancy trips, buy cars or go out to dinner?!?!?
I'm sorry, but this attitude absolutely INFURIATES me!
I hope that should you ever find yourself crying over a lack of food or the eminent loss of the roof over your head, you will be shown more empathy than you show those who are hurting now.
Oh Boy, What a difference just 24 hours make. Things are far worse in Egypt. I don't think I can recall a time in my life that any country was in such unrest. Non-Egyptians are said to be fleeing the country. Israel is nervous as Egypt is their biggest ally. America is straddling the fence.
If the president of Egypt does flee the country, what then? Who will lead? The possibilities are truly frightening.
Our local newschannel has several stories on this.
QUOTE....
CAIRO (AP) - Up to 2,000 people are gathered at Cairo's main airport, hoping to get a flight out of the country, but some may be stuck for a while. Many, including tourists, don't have reservations for Saturday, and Western carriers have been canceling flights into Cairo after days of violent unrest.

I caught part of the news last night. They showed a tear gas canister. Guess where it was made. USA UUUGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!
It really does give you a new perspective since I have been thinking it would be nice to have a small cash flow coming. But after seeing what is going on in Egypt it just does not seem as important since all my needs are met and I am not wondering if my place will be ransacked.
I have to say I limit the amount of news I watch sometimes. Not that I don't want to be aware, it just gets overwhelming sometimes.
no i have been on this site for a long time and have saved for a very long time.. in my circle it is not uncommon for folks to be able to survive for 2 or more years with limited or no work..
i cut my spending in the 2 years that i changed fields( doubled my hourly wage) and paid off a lot of debt.. and refuse to live out in the country , its just not for me..employment oppertunites(sp) tend to be limited and wages lower..also live in an area where i have access to the 3 major highways in the state so i can get many jobs. i was waiting for the new budgets (medical field),have been applying and hope to find something soon..
if that doesnt pan out i have payroll and customer service exper.so im hopeful..i refuse to live in fear or be afraid..it doesnt work and i find i cant think clearly..
no need to be nasty..unemployment pays well when a person earns well..plus thanks to all the wonderful folks here i learned what was a need and a want..how to make my own mixes(doing for years) and to save, save, save..
oh the last comment... that was said to me..how this family needed the mother to make a high income in additon to the fathers income..the mother was whining about not being able to take a vacation last year as the father was underemployed
The bottom line is: Believe what you want and prepare how you feel you need to prepare.
