Default DD Filing Charges Against Her Boss

This is a bit of a long story.....dd has been working for the same company for nearly 2 years. During this time, her boss has become abusive toward her. Her boss first started acting very possessive of her -trying to act as if she were her mother....trying to get into her personal business & becoming verbally abusive...dd distanced herself as much as she could from this person. B/c she had to deal with her boss, she just went to work, did what she was suppose to - only talking to her boss about work-related topics. Well....last week dd's boss physically abused her. 2 times she grabbed dd's arms & dug her nails into her where she left bruises...the third time she punched dd in the arm & said "she was just playing" WTF?? Dd told her to stop b/c she didn't appreciate it & the boss just laughed about it. There are also times where the boss would grab dd by the hips "to move her out of the way"...also making dd feel uncomfortable. This woman is absolutely insane! Dd was afraid to say anything b/c she really needs this job -she's trying to save up for college. Anyway, a co-worker & friend had witnessed the abuse & reported it to the mall security.....they took dd's statement & took pictures of the marks on her arms...then all of the info was sent to the police department. Dd went down to talk to the detective & now charges are being filed against dd's boss.
fast forward to today....the co worker that made the report is now being accused by the boss of stealing....& there is not a shred of truth to it...dd is afraid that she's going to pressure her & the co worker into quitting or she'll try to make up something to fire them in retaliation. If the boss does this, I think that dd & her friend could probably sue her.(the boss is the owner of the store).
I think that dd did the right thing...but at the same time, she is afraid of the retaliation that might result from this...& jobs are hard to find here. Please pray for her.

I always tell my girls that if you don't stand up for yourself and say "NO" it's the same thing as allowing a behaviour. I work in a male-dominated career and I often have to stand my ground. I beleive that by doing so, improper behaviour won't be the norm when my daughters are in the workplace. I absolutely believe your DD is doing the right thing because she is making sure that the bully boss is aware that her behaviour will not be tolerated. That awful woman may think twice before treating someone like this again.

Doing the right thing is not always the easiest way - if it was, everyone would be doing it!

I just noticed the mall part, have your daughter call the regional manager ( her bosses boss) or corporate. Preferably the Regional as that is the next up the chain of command. If it is a national retail outlet by any chance her boss will have a hard time maintaining her job.Tell your daughter to keep notes written with dates , times, witnesses etc.

I have to agree with Happy Mama. I would think it would be the safest way of protecting her job...and with documentation and witnesses I would fight it as long as resources held out.

Have your DD talk to the police about whistleblower protection. I don't know what the laws are in your state, but most states have some sort of protection for people who bring illegal practices to the notice of authorities. If nothing else, they might end up charging the woman with intimidating a witness. She sounds like a bully, and most bullies back down when they realize they can't intimidate people into submission.

The accusation of stealing won't hold water - if the coworker was stealing, why was she still employed? Why was there no mention of it until AFTER the abuse charges were filed?

DD is doing the right thing - she may have an unpleasant road ahead but if she does nothing, then someone else will end up suffering the same abuse.
If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.

Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

I admire your daughter and her coworker. Please do talk to the police about the intimidation the boss is trying to use against them.

Absolutely! When I was 19/20, I worked at a newspaper office for a man who harassed me. He would get in my physical space, yell at me in a way that was inappropriate, and push me! I didn't know how to handle it and it ended badly. Knowing what I know now, I should have filed a complaint.

When I was 18, I had a boss/bosses do this at my first job. I finally got fired. I didn't need the job, thank God, but it would have been horrible if I had.

Tell your daughter and her co-worker to hold on and hang tough, do check the whistleblower laws in your area, and document everything you can with pictures and dates.

    Good luck!
