Just me thinking out loud and wondering also.
Food and fuel prices are NOT included in the cost of living figures. Go figure, right?!

This makes so much sense now since you have to pay for a cart (keeps the company from having cart retrievers) and you have to bring your own bags or buy then or use boxes. Aldi also only accepts cash, checks or debit. They never have accepted credit cards.

Very smart company if you ask me. I never put 2 & 2 together as far as the low prices and the various ways they save $$$ doing business.

You don't have to pay for a cart, you just have to "use" a quarter to borrow the cart..you get it back when you return the cart, which I think is a good idea so the carts aren't out there in the lot smashing into everyone's cars!!! anyway, I was at Aldi's yesterday, and a gallon of 2% was $1.99...that is the lowest I have seen it in a long time...sugar for a 5# bag, is $2.69...I have been stocking up on sugar, br sugar, choc chips, coffee....gas here is $3.55/gal...I have 2 daughters commuting to college with totally different schedules over 20 mi. away one way...and they can't share rides because of different schedules and they both work...but , I know there are others in much worse shape..thankfully I work at home and hubby works 2 mi away, but he drives to the shop and then works out of town, at least 4 days a wk, with us footing the hotel bill and food bills...this is extremely tough, and then with insurance premiums being $191/wk...again, I know we have it better than alot of others...just giving you a glimpse of expenses here...

Aldi's doesn't except checks at least our Aldi's does not except checks.

Cash, food stamp card , or debit. That is it.

I remember when they didn't take debit cards either. They changed that when the food stamps changed to a card system.

I see many people leave with their cart full no grocery bags (from home or bought there) no boxes either. They just load it in the the car. (maybe a laundry basket?)

Next time I won't reply at almost 3am because the post sure doesn't make much sense and there's apparently NO edit button now to fix the jibberish!

Ours takes checks. Yeah, I see them just tossing the stuff in the back of the car/vehicle too. Ugh, would hate to unload that mess.

Yup, which is why I'm upping my grocery budget to $200 every 2 weeks to get started on my stockpile again. I've been taking advantage of the B1G1F meat deals to stockpile meat and am making headway on that. We've been eating more fresh fruit and there's no getting around paying the price for a lot of that. I will however be hitting the Farmers market, the Amish store, and picking strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries myself this year. If it is not a needs item and not on sale and I have a coupon, I will most likely do without something. We don't have room to grow a big garden but I can plant a couple of tomato and green bell pepper plants, and I want to plant potatoes at one end of the house where I used to plant flowers. Fortunately we live in an agricultural county. I need to learn to make bread, and cut down on potatoe chips. DH needs to cut down on the Pepsi (which he has been doing a nice job on), and candy.
I'll be and have been shopping less and less at WM. They don't have a clue how coupons work and constantly change their policy. I'll gladly shop Giant Eagle where they know how coupons work, never argue about a coupon, and they double up to .99 cents.

$70 to drive to my cabin this last weekend.... had to take the truck...it snowed and snowed up there last week... so glad I can usually take my honda.... cost to drive that is half of what the truck is...

Thank goodness I have no drive for a work commute..both my husband and I live less than a mile from where we work.

I find myself shopping at more stores to hit the loss leaders.

This week alone I have been to:

    Albertsons
    Safeway
    Fred Meyer
    Rite Aid

Luckily they are all close to my house
