Default Is There A Powdered Milk Shortage??

We had went to the store last night to buy some milk & to our horror, it jumped in price again. So we decided that it was time for us to go back to using powdered milk (kids are going to hate us). Anyway, we would always buy the biggest box - the one that makes 5 gallons - and the store has it on clearance. They only sell their store brand of powdered milk and now they won't be selling the big boxes anymore. We were lucky to have bought the last few boxes that were on the shelf. Sam's club had stopped selling powdered milk about 8 months ago.
I don't know if this is related or not, but I read that the feds are buying up billions of dollars worth of dried goods & that's why alot of dry goods dealers are having a difficult time keeping up w/ orders from the average citizen.
Has anyone else noticed a change in the availability of powdered milk? Maybe its just my area??

Sorry, I am in Canada and don't use powdered milk, but your post has made me think that I should look into it.It is just the 2 of us now,but we go through lots of milk.I just went to the cheapest place around here$3.99 a bag,and it is up to $4.19 now.I am a huge coffee drinker and thats where alot of milk goes.I really should start drinking it black. It certainly isn't a bad idea to start using powdered mik again. When I shop,I will take a look to see what our prices and availability is.

I live in Canada as well and noticed that the big bag I usually buy has gone up but I'm not sure how much. I think it was a couple dollars as it's not on my price list, I'm not sure what it was before.

Maybe I need to stop by Aldi tonight and get some to store in the pantry. We don't normally drink it, but it will be nice to know we have some if it is all gone.

I just purchased some last week - just in case.

What if you mix powdered milk and real milk?

We have it in our local SuperWalmarts, but it is actually more expensive than regular milk!

I recently heard this as well.

I'm not sure how much powdered milk normally costs but I got a big box about a month ago before the ice storm and it was around $13

I haven't been able to find it at Costco since we bought a membership a few months ago. I'll have to ask my Grandma if they have it at Sam's Club.

I don't think there's a shortage but it has been going up in price for the last couple of years. As far as mixing whole and powered, thats all worked out in The Tightwad Gazette.

We had tried that once...actually it tastes better if you don't mix it. The best tasting powdered milk(if there really is such a thing lol) I would have to say its Carnation. I think I will try adding a few tablespoons of vanilla in ours to see if I can coax the houseapes to start drinking it again. We're going to miss our whole milk...but we gotta do what we gotta do.

I just bought a box for the pantry at Aldis. 5.99 and it makes 2 gallons.

I'm really curious as to why the gov is buying it up.

Yes, I'm curious too. I recently saw a video recorded on a phone by an on duty marine. He was posing the question himself. He showed the inside of a massive cave of sorts where you watched the 18 wheelers roll in to unload food.

I also just recently spoke with someone who tried to purchase dried foods and was told that the waiting list was years long. They had a massive order to fill and the regulars joes were getting put on a waiting list. ???????

Yes, it seems our government is stockpiling food. I think I need to retract my curious comment and say instead that it makes me paranoid. Just what do they know that we don't?

This is our favorite. It taste just like real milk

I recently saw this warehouse cave shown on an episode of Modern Marvels.

That's interesting. Who would procure the services of Marengo Warehouse?
