Goodbye EF!
It's been one of those weeks. It started when we did our taxes and discovered that one of DH's employers did not have taxes taken out of his paycheck for 10 months in 2010.
And none of his employers accounted for the city taxes we have to pay. That happens every year but it's still a large check to write.
So at this point our $5000 EF is gone, but hey, that's what they are for, right?
Well, this morning I had to take the car in to the shop because it was making a bad noise..... we're looking at a new power steering pump and belt tensioner. $$$. Just what I need.

I don't know but it really, really does. It proves itself over and over. Glad you had a healthy EF to cover it. At least you just owe yourself back an EF and not a CC company. Sincere compassion to you.

Well, the good news is that I qualified for the shop's "credit card" -- which is interest free, more like a payment plan than a CC -- and it comes with 6 free oil changes. That will cover both our cars for the remainder of the year. By the time we get the bill, we'll have another paycheck in to cover it.

How did your DH not notice that taxes weren't being withheld? He should make sure right now that taxes are being properly withheld for 2011, and if not you might want to consider paying estimates during the year so it's not such a big lump at the end.
Sucks when it all happens at once :-( Hope things start looking up soon!

We didn't notice because the office went paperless. I wasn't seeing weekly statements, only the deposits once it hit the bank. DH had access to them from work, but never checked what they were withholding, only that he was getting paid.

Failure to withhold on the employer's part is serious business. Why didn't your employer do this?
If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.
Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

Glad you had an EF saved up for times like these - though you kinda knew it was coming. And the payment plan for the car repairs, you lucked out that its interest free and have a plan in place to pay it off.
Even though DH's office went 'paperless' you still should receive some sort of statement - be it via online or annually. Can DH print it out from work since he can only access it from there? (not sure how 'paperless' that really is though)2012: The Year Of The Purge!
