if a child is raised that what they have to say as an explanation for a reason isnt listened to or doesnt matter - they learn not to offer one because its no use and trying to offer one often gives them more issues ( ie gets them in more trouble )

nothing is ever cut and dry with kids when one doesnt know what their living circumstances are when not visiting with grandmom .

most kids that are just plain destructive and disrespectful also tend to lie alot - not offering any explanation seems odd to me for someone intentionally being destructive , unless he is acting out for attention . and when someone is mad if he is needing to talk - he wont - .

This is off the subject really but as a hearing impaired person I know 2 things.

1. The skin in the ear is the most sensitive skin on the human body.

2. When looking at # one it is also a fast way to spread bacteria from ear infections.

I wouldn't suggest that ANYONE share ear buds.

He needs to pay for them with money or with sweat labor. If he has no money, he needs to be your slave until he earns $50. That they ONLY way he's going to learn.
