I saw an interesting article in the paper today, I'll summarize some points, perhaps nothing new but always a good reminder -

- Change gears at 2300 RPM, which is the most efficient speed. If it's a diesel car, change gears at 1800 RPM. Drive at a steady speed and accelerate steadily rather than suddenly.

- Avoid unnecessary braking and speed changes. Calm driving is less expensive and more comfortable.

- Stop by decelerating gradually (when possible, obviously).

- Be sure to pay attention to what is going on in the distance, not just in the immediate area, to give you more time to react, and keep a safe distance.

- Don't overload your car and avoid using roof racks. The additional weight and increased wind resistance increase the amount of fuel burned.

- Don't warm up your car before you drive. Modern cars don't need to be warmed up outside of extreme weather circumstances.

- Keep an eye on your tire pressure. Good tires reduce resistance and increase your fuel efficiency.
