I have brick in my kitchen. It holds up to anyhting. BUT, if you're one of those OCD eat off the floor people, forget it. Unless you seal it to make it shiny it always looks dull and can look dirty even tho you just swept and mopped. *shrugs* Doesn't bother me. I like the way it looks.

oh and do not drop anything lmao I can even break melamine or corelle dishes lol!

We put in a new linoleum a few months ago that looks like hardwood floors and I must say I love it and it is so easy to keep clean...well except when I've got butter hands like today and keep dropping things. Its very easy cleanup though.

We are building a new house and will be going with hardwood floors in the kitchen. I just don't care for tile in the kitchen.

I wouldn't go with those self stick tiles. They tend to slide apart if the floor isn't flat.

Have really disgusting linoleum type tiles in the kitchen. They are an off white with multi-colored specs of green, maroon, and blue. Looks very industrial grade and made in the 70's. I really this it is the ugliest tile around. I should just laminate over the tile with vinyl tile.

We have cheap ceramic tiles right now(came with the house)...hard on the feet, they break everything and slippery as all get out when wet. When we redo our kitchen I'm going to have high quality sheet vinyl put in.

12x12 Ceramic tiles in the kitchen, dining room, laundry room, DD's bedroom, bathroom, foyer and hallway.

    LOVE IT!!!

Cold is not an issue - we are in the deep south and do not even run a heater in the winter months.

    Cleanliness - not an issue

Breaking things - not an issue. In 7 years we have only dropped a couple of things, nothing major.

I would not have anything other than ceramic tiles in the kitchen. We have not had any real issues with ours.

Same here, at least I think that's what was put down. It was in before I moved in three years ago, and it's still in good shape. We do not have children, yet, and we do not have a dog, so that may play into it a bit.

Our kitchen has hardwood floors. They've held up amazing considering my house is 130 yrs old and the floors are original to the house. I love them.

We had tile in our house in AL and I HATED it, esp in the kitchen. It was so hard on my back when I stood working in the kitchen for any length of time. They were impossible to clean, when I mopped I would have to get on my hands & knees and hand-dry them with a towel or they would be streaky/cloudy. They were very slippery. Easily broken/cracked (and expensive to fix). One of my kids dropped a jelly jar on the floor once and took a divot out of one of the tiles.

Our kitchen floor has a dip near the stove, but we decided to go with laminate anyway. No problems in the 2 or more years it's been down. And it's so easy to care for!

Your house sounds amazing. We got one of the old houses that doesn't have anything original to it. Nothing. We have a friend that bought a house 6 houses down from us and has original EVERYTHING (he even had to replace the wiring!) and is always talking about how he wants to rip it all out! Gah! I told him if he wanted to do something like that he could just swap houses with me! His house is beautiful...he discovered the nice hardwood floors when he pulled up the carpet. *sigh* Me, all we've found are the remnants of the wallpaper that was up (um, wow!) and some of the awesome choices of vinyl (or whatever it is they used back then) flooring that went with that wallpaper. All I know is if I had spent any time in those rooms I would have had some major headaches from the color schemes. There's red and green wallpaper in the kitchen....red squares kind of surrounded by green and white circles. I can't imagine an entire room done in it! Crazy the things you discover when you start ripping stuff apart!

We have rolled vinyl in our kitchen. When we renovate, I'm putting something a little prettier in the kitchen. I thought of Indian slate tile, which would be marvelous. However, DH is afraid of messing up laying that tile so I'll have to do it myself.

I wouldn't want hardwood in the kitchen. That's too much of a hassle to deal with. Tile from the kitchen into the dining room, then we'll have bamboo flooring throughout the rest of the main level.

You can also do a stamped concrete. It's not just for the outdoors, anymore.

My mom has peel and stick tile Vynal flooring in the kitchen ... they look like the 1/4-1/8 inch kind from Lowes except it was purchased at Ollies. It is okay, however mom has a fit if even a drop of water hits the flooring because she worries it will rot the floor ... although they put water resist underflooring stuff under it so i am not sure why she is so antsy.

Now the living room we got the smooshy natural stone looking vynal flooring from Lowes.. its is pretty and cooshy to the toes..cuts down on noise level much like carpeting does in a room... however if you sit chairs or couches on it it will dent it or cut it .. We use swiffers and when its wet swifered it seems like it retains moisture for what seems like FOREVER.
