$4 a day in meals article
Saw this article today. Seemed to be more in line with what is practiced by members here on FV.
3 meals plus snacks for $4 a day - 1 - cheap groceries - MSN Money
Was happy to see the article took a realistic approach to meal planning.

I enjoyed this article
I found this interesting
from the article "the average Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program ... benefit of $33.34 per person per week"
That is more than I spend a month for groceries. And I think we eat very well."Everyday as your walking down the street, everybody that you met has an original point of view" -Arthur PBS

Compared to what is generally put out there in these kind of articles this one seemed like a realistic list for almost anywhere in the country. What I generally run into when I read these "experiments" and "lists" though is that for me and or DH not only do I find the amounts reasonable but I can generally do better AND eat better/healthier than what they come up with. On the flip side of that, I also find that when it comes to feeding my boys once they passed around age 10/11ish I don't do anywhere near as well. This was also true when I had my brother and sister as teenagers and when, even as an adult, my brother works his job AND does roofing during the summer. The amount type of food/fuel some people need is much different than others and this doesn't seem to get touched on much even though it most definately effects what you buy/spend.

Ok. So that means at the rate of 33.34 a week per person I should spend upwards of $800.00... I think not, that is more like the amount I would spend in 2-3 MONTHS depending on the time of year and the kids activities. Sheeesh if I had that much to spend I could have lobster tail, fillet minon, and prime rib. LOL.. But I don't. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the article, I'll refer to it for some variety in our meals. I'm down to $150 a month for 2 people but getting bored with our choices.

I usually spend 120 a month for food some months we spend 20 on milk and bread only. I combine coupons and sales we stock up when sales are really good. We usually buy meat when they are marked way down. We bought t-bone steaks about an inch think for 1.50 a piece I bought all they had.
