    Default Turtle meat?

I saw turtle meat in the manager's specials. It was marked down to $4.59 a pound.

    I found it odd.

But it appears to a delicacy as I found on the net 5 pounds for $95 dollars.

    Who knew?

I was kinda shocked to see frozen turtles still in their shells at the Asian grocery store here. $12/each. Nothing like digging through the frozen bagged 'seafood' section to pull out something you've never seen in there before and discover it to be a turtle. I was pretty sad.

~Snapper soup is pretty popular in seafood restaurants around here. I don't like it but it isn't bad either. I'd eat turtles if I had to.~

Guess it depends on what you are used to eating. Do not think I could eat turtle though. Probably would if no one told me what I was eating!

I have a pet turtle, couldn't do it. Well ok if I was starving I might eat it before one of my dogs, but other than that, in general, don't think I'll try turtle.

turtle soup is a cajun/creole louisiana dish that can be found in a lot of high end restaurants throughout our state. Commander's Palace and Arnaud's both very famous restaurants in New Orleans' French Quarter are known for their turtle soup.

I don't see why not. People have been eating turtles forever. At some point, (if my drs can ever tell me if turtles would be included in my shellfish allergy) I'd like to try it. In lots of areas in the US they are common place for dinner, like another villager mentioned, even in high end places.

I'm deathly allergic to shellfish. I didn't think about turtles might be in that category.

Let me know what you learn.

Nope couldn't do it unless I was starving or if someone served it without my knowledge. We have turtles that lay their eggs each spring by our pond and they are just too cute.

When I was little, my grandfather, used to catch snapping turtles and make soup out of them....but up until this point I was the only person I had ever heard of that had ever had turtle soup. From what I remember...tastes kinda like chicken with a tough texture...but I was like 3 or 4.....So I could be totally wrong....LOL

Me too. Regular fish as well. All the fam can eat those though. I asked because later this summer one of our friends is doing a NewOrleans BBQ and is making turtle. Dr said she didn't know if those are classified the same or not, but didn't want me to try it until she'd done some research. I will definitely let you know. Last time I ate somethin with worcestershire sauce in it I went to the ER in a pretty flashing light van. So... I am being careful.

(worcestershire sauce has anchovies in it)

I LOVE turtle soup. There is an episode of Andrew Zimmerman in PA catching and eating turtle soup. I am not sure what kind they cook at the Chinese market but snapping turtle tastes similar to Chicken. The leg meat was fried like chicken and the rest makes a creamy brown gravy. I wouldn't ruin it with any spice it doesn't need it.
