Potatoes are still around $2 for 10 lbs. here, which is only a little higher than usual. We are 30 minutes from Idaho, though! Was there a blight or disease that went wild this year, maybe?

I hope they don't get too high around here, but they are easy to grow and you don't need a garden bed. Grow them in buckets, plastic tubs or even plastic trash bags filled with soil. You can even grow potatoes in straw if you don't have soil. As long as you water them, they are pretty hard to kill!

I'm wondering what the 100# bags are going to cost me to cold store this winter? I always cold store potatoes, apples, onions. This year I plan on cold storing pumpkins also as pumpkin prices went so high last Winter I could not afford it, then the pumpkin supply ran out in our area and the shelves still don't have any pumpkin. I don't see any other way to feed my family but buying huge amounts and cold storing. But as soon as Spring is near that's all over with and we've got to buy from the stores. I'm not liking the prices.

Potatoes were $5.99 for 10# this week, $3.99 for 5#. My guys can eat 5# of potatoes at one meal, I don't consider them very economical at this time.

Me either....I made potato soup and beef stew...needless to say it was NOT economical. When I fix potato soup I want potatoes in it...not liquid. I've always used potatoes as the mainstay/filler in beef stew.

I use them for filler too, and yeah who wants a watery potato soup? The last time I made potato soup it was like $15 by the time I added the cream, whole milk, butter and onions. CRAZY! Potato soup is what I used to make for cheap meals years ago. Not cheap any more. And beef stew too, potatoes are what makes it stretch.

My oldest would eat an entire 5# bag of mashed potatoes if I let him. And the last time we had company over was at Christmas and it was just an extra family, I made 20# of potatoes for augratin. Can you image doing that at todays prices with the potatoes, cheese, cream and butter?

When the basic staples go up as they have been something has to happen somewhere ... eggs, milk, flour, sugar, potatoes ... those are the very basic items and all of them have went up over the last 10 years a dollar or more.

I remember not to many years ago
    dozen eggs 79 cents
    gallon of milk 1.29
5lb flour or sugar 79 cents
    1o lb potatoes 1.50

Potatoes have always been a cheap staple but it seems like it may be moving away from that.... yikes.

I think I spent $5.99 for a 10lb bag yesterday. I think about it like this:

10lb of potatoes = $5.99 and that will last me two weeks. A box of stuffing for $2.19 and that'll last me one meal.

Regardless of how much the price of potatoes is now, think about how much it costs you to have pre-packaged side dishes.

I hear you on that one...Strawberries on a happy note...were only 99 cents per lb and raspberries were 1.77 per 6oz...usually strawberries are 3 bucks a lb and raspberries are 4.50 for 6 oz. Potatoes are around 7-8 bucks per 10lb bag

I bought 10 lbs for 2.99 on Saturday - that is pretty much the usual price for them, give or take 30 cents or so. Sometimes they are cheaper, especially the 5 lb bags of yukons or reds.

In a lot of soups that call for cream I use evaporated milk. It gives the same mouthfeel as cream, costs less and fewer calories. Works especially well for recipes that have lots of veggies or herbs/spices.
