    Unhappy

I think the wacky weather's to blame. We'll see more of it when corn is 'due', and the wheat's supposed to come in, as well as the cotton. Midwestern flooding . . . economy . . . depreciating $$.

(Here the local strawberries are over 5.50 a pint!!! CA strawberries 3.00!!)

Potatoes are crazy expensive here, too! DH asked why we haven't had baked potatoes lately and I told him about prices. He quickly backed down. On the other hand, I am getting strawberries at $2 for the pack just larger than the pint.

Everything is outrageous right now. It's bad when potatoes, which used to be a good cheap filler, are a luxury item.

If things keep up this way, and these become the standard prices, we are all in big trouble. I'm sticking as much as possible to Ontario produce. The stuff grown locally is way more affordable. The imports from the US are out of reach for us.

I bought strawberries today for $1.88/pound.

Potatoes are still a good buy, especially if you're cooking for two. One large baked potato isn't really a very expensive side dish, even at .80/lb. A pound of potatoes is more than enough for two people, so that works out to only .40 per person. What can you eat that's much cheaper?

I have looked at the store lately as I got some in our produce basket. I'm scared now.

I did pay $1.99 for peaches today. Sigh.

I think so also! I use them as a main course, instead of a side, and they become even cheaper.

My question would be what kind of spuds do you go for. I do not mind russett or plain white potatoe.. however my mom ( with her more.. err.. refined taste) goes for yukon gold or red potatoes ... The speciality potatoes are more expensive, but for some applications are yummier.

We have gotten mixed fingerling ( yellow, red, and purple ) potatoes here they are a little more expensive, but a wash and a drizzle of olive oil and a little italian seasoning into the oven and vwala... my daughter thinks purple potatoes are the bee's knees *LOL*

I feel rather lucky this week. Our Fareway had them for 2.99 for a 15 pound bag. So, I bought one bag and this should last us about 3-4 weeks.
