I'm not sure about the cost, but what about unplugging it and letting it run off of battery power alone? Then, you can plug it back in to charge to full and repeat. I do that with mine (partially because I don't always write when I'm at my desk, so I take it over to the chaise lounge and write there).

We have one of these and we just move it around to wherever we want to know how much power draw something uses. Then we can calculate the rate.
For a laptop though - I usually plug mine in to charge. Once charged, I leave it on 'sleep' mode unplugged. Its ready to go when I need it and not constantly drawing power. Plus its better for the battery life as well (keeps it longer)2012: The Year Of The Purge!

Hibernate shouldn't cost much if its less than 5 years old. Computers have become much more energy efficient in the past 5 years.
It is best for the computer battery if you let it run off the battery until nearly drained then full charge it, then unplug again and run it off the battery.
Our habit at the schools is to charge them overnight, use all day with battery. Works well, some of ours are going on 6 years with their original batteries.LDR
