My AC is not really cooling my house the way I think it should be, either. But, it has been extremely hot, with very high humidity levels for several days in a row. I think a lot of moisture in the air makes the AC work harder. I sometimes turn on a floor fan to help circulate the cool air and it really seems to help.

You need some floor fans Max Air is the best. I bought 2 and my house is nice and cool , ac on 78. Purchased from Home Depot for 39.99 the only new thing I have purchased this year.

Frustrating!!
Don't know if this will help but here's what I do, I have a free-standing AC unit:
Point the vents up to the ceiling, cool air falls.
Clean ALL the vents, nooks and crannies of the AC. Do this more than just at the beginning of the season.
Shut all doors to rooms that are not being used, all day. When you need something in there, pop in pop out keep those doors shut. For those rooms, do the open-windows-cool-nights trick instead. I run around opening windows to those rooms as soon as the sun lets up a bit in the evening.
Block all windows not needed with tin-foil covered tote lids, cardboard with foil, etc. you get the picture. This has helped quite a bit for those windows that just have sheers. Yes, my house is a bit darker but its cooler too.
Hope some of those tips help you, I'm dreading my next electric bill as it will be the first one to reflect my major AC use this past month.LDR

Living in Texas, AC is LIFE SUPPORT. Our summer heat is as debilitating as extreme winter weather is up north. So, I totally understand heat issues. My almost-new central AC was acting up last night, too (not cooling well), so had to have it looked at ($$$). My sincere sympathies. I hope you get cool air back as soon as possible.

I feel your pain.
We're in a rental and they just had someone come out to service the A/C. It worked for one day sort of. Couldn't cool the place below 82 degrees. We will have to report it again. Only works as a fan, ever since.
I would love to open windows and use window fans but I can't lock the windows. Most of the windows are huge picture windows and we have no dowels or rods to keep them from opening more than a certain amount. Our neighborhood has a couple of bad seed houses with known druggies in them and it just isn't safe if you can't lock the windows open at a few inches.
Plus I'm pregnant and heat is killing me.
Fortunately, temps have come down to the high 80's when they were supposed to be in the high 90's - low 100's. And my kids don't care about temperature too much.MissSeetonFan

Have you changed the filters, also try closing your curtains, this also helps keep it cooler.
Good Luck.

Not trying to convince you anything about AC, I just wanted to share that we use these throughout the house and they do work:

For those evenings that you may want to crack the windows for a cross-breeze. Super cheap.LDR

Thank you! I have tried looking for those in stores (Lowe's/Home Depot/Walmart, etc) and nobody has them. I know about them (my dad's a locksmith and we had them on our windows growing up) and I have been trying everything to find them in my area (except maybe locksmiths, oops).
Do you know how they work with the vinyl window frames though? That is one thing I'm worried about: that they will be too strong and punch a hole in the plastic.
Good luck with everyone who needs A/C. This is a weird weather year.MissSeetonFan

Yes mine are vinyl, no issues thus far, have had the house about 8 years now with them.
