cost of education per student $$$
After hearing about private school dollar amount for tuition I was curious how much money it takes for public school
I found some 2006-2007 school year numbers
Of All States, New York's Schools Spend Most Money Per Pupil - NYTimes.com
per pupil varied by state ranging from mid $5,000 to almost $16,000 per student
average of 8.3% coming from federal sources 47.6% from state sources and 44.1% from local sources"Everyday as your walking down the street, everybody that you met has an original point of view" -Arthur PBS

I think it all really goes to show that it's not how much money you throw at the problem. Some private school charge less than that and offer better education. Some public school with lower per student spending are better than those with higher per student spending. So it's not just a "more money will fix the problem" deal.

I haven't spent $16K total in 23 years of homeschooling four kids. Cannot even imagine having that kind of cash at my disposal

Yeah, and I am taxed for the local schools, too.

Our city schools (public school system) has over 35,000 students and is the biggest mess you can imagine. They spend on average, $9,850 per student per year and still have massive money and budget problems. They do not have books for all classes, facilities are in horrible shape (bathrooms don't have working sinks, etc...) and the good teachers are leaving to go to better systems.
The $8K check I cut every year for DS's private school tuition is the BEST money I spend. The education he is getting is superior to the one DD received in public school. She is no slacker and made the most of her education (graduated Valedictorian from her class of 384, of the thousands of graduating seniors in our area, she was the second highest earner of scholarships, receiving over $270,000 in scholarship offers, 4.2 GPA, SGA President, etc...). However, I would not allow her to go to a public school in this city again if I had it to do over.
Many, many families are moving out of this city because the school system is so messed up.DD (19)

Ask me how many phone calls I've gotten in the last 23 years saying "I want to homeschool - where do I go to be given the books?"

Anyone have a private for profit corporation running their schools?
Like this one Edison Schools
[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edison_Schools"]Edison Schools - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]
Interesting it was traded on the stockmarket. This one did not make a profit in the last four years. Any others out there?
I know that my local school system has a program (alternative choice school) that uses the K-12 online curriculum and a local teacher. They say this is a cheaper way to teach then the traditional."Everyday as your walking down the street, everybody that you met has an original point of view" -Arthur PBS
