My nephews live in Pa and both nephews work at the same place. So they travel to all parts of the east coast ,something that has to do with digging for oil .Well anyways this site they were at for work was a nice place for a big bear to come and get left over food out of the work dumpster and most of the guys would order pizza and whatever was left they pitched. So the bear around the same time every day would come get the boxed pizza eat the left overs and throw the box back in the dumpster. Well after months the bear stopped showing up. Until a few days ago. She brought her cubs with her. So now these workers have 2 cubs and a mama to deal with. The mama didn't bother anyone but now with her cubs in tow speak a different story. The forestry is trying to trap the mama bear and cubs and take them far away from where there working. I feel bad for the bears because we has a society have invaded there homes. So they coming more into town looking for food.

They should have had a bar on the Dumpster to lock it so the bear couldn't get into it. There's a reason why that saying started: "A fed bear is a dead bear." All three of them may end up being destroyed because someone was irresponsible with their trash. Sad.

I sure laughed when I read this post... when you said you had a thug in the neighborhood and went after him with a gun I thought...' My, he IS a brazen one!"I sure was laughing when you said it was a bear.It is interesting to hear about your life in the wild. Please post more frequently if you are able.

The bears have been bad around here too this year. Ripping out birdfeeders, getting into garbage ect. I hope they catch those thugs soon so your little one can enjoy some summer!

We've had more bear issues than usual, too. Don't know why really. There's plenty of wild food this year. Our bear hasn't been into the trash yet but it's after the bird feeders often enough. Hate that.

Bear trap sits empty so far, both the COs and I check it multiple times a day. Crafty bugger, this one... lol.
Fashioned a temporary fence around the yard, stretched the chain link fence we have across the back bush, connected it to both neighbors' fences and propped it up with old barrels.
Not too strong, but enough of an inconvenience that it should keep them out. My little girl feels confident enough to go out in the backyard again, and now the dogs can stay out there with her.

The bird feeder outside my office is MIA. I suspect Yogi is the culprit. The raccoons usually don't take them down and drag them off.
This bear is starting to get on my nerves.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

These are a couple of pictures from my neighbor Sherry (well, there's one house in between us) from a couple of days ago:

Why can you not shoot a bear that they know is being a problem? Does someone have to be mauled first? I would be carrying my shotgun too, the CO has already shown that he CAN'T be there as quick as he says, by then someone could be hurt.

Brand new rookie CO. Nice guy, but just like most new law enforcement guys, I think he wants to "prove himself". I'm not really concerned, I've talked to more senior COs and they have confirmed that there is nothing wrong with carrying a loaded firearm in the woods for protection, especially a shotgun (not really a long-distance, hunting weapon). The RCMP have told people in the past that although they also won't recommend it, as long as you are aware that you are 100% responsible for your shot, no problems.
As you can see, we're not talking about a nice, well spoken, hat wearing Yogi here. That's a pretty sizable bear.

Black bears usually aren't dangerous unless cornered. No, not even with cubs around. (That's a grizzly trait.) They're not particularly scary as long as you don't harass them and if you do, then IMO you deserve what you get.
It's against the law here to shoot a bear out of season. We can call the DNR about nuisance bears and they'll handle it. But we live in the woods and moved here knowing full well there were bears in the area. This was their home before it was ours, and it's up to us to fit into their world as much as possible, not the other way around. Therefore, we try to keep our yard picked up so there's nothing for them to eat and usually they move on. It's our fault the feeders aren't taken in at night, because we keep forgetting to do that.
