fire extinguisher
Do you have one and where is it in your house? This weekend I forgot about some sugar water I was boiling on the stove for the hummingbirds, it started a fire. I was able to put it out with water but at first we had so much smoke I couldn't see how bad the fire was. I went to grab my extinguisher, I got it off the wall by yanking and was fumbling with the clasp to get it separated from the hanger before I realized I could just use water. Anyhow it now sits on my hutch. The hanger slowed me down in the rush of it all. I had never thought of it that way but realized I needed to get to it quicker in an emergency. So this is my public service announcement for today.

I have known about this in the back of my mind for many years. For whatever reason this thread has put it to the front and I intend to get one for my kitchen and one for my garage. Thank you and I am so glad you are safe!

We have one in the kitchen, hanging in arms reach above the kitchen sink. It was a wedding gift, if we hadn't received it as I gift I honestly don't know if it would have ever crossed my mind to get one.

Good to know you are safe and able to put the fire out. Great that you posted this to remind us about safety especially in the kitchen.
I was able to use baking soda when food underneath the burner caught fire. Put it out right away.

We have one on the kitchen counter. One in the hall closet, about six steps (towards the exit) from the one in the kitchen, as backup. One by the wood stove. One by the basement stairs, about six steps (towards the exit) from the one by the stove, as backup. One in the workshop.
Know how to operate your fire extinguishers ahead of time. When there's smoke and flame and your bloodstream is saturated with adrenaline, it is not the time to try to learn.
You can never have too many. We have a really good fire department, especially for a rural volunteer department (bragging here - I'm a member), but even their best conceivable response time is about 8 minutes. If you can't get the fire out in the first 30 seconds after it starts, get everyone out of the house and call 911 from a neighbour's house.

Glad it worked out.
You can also make hummingbird syrup in the microwave. Just heat it up enough to dissolve the sugar. Then it's a self-limiting proposition since the micro will shut itself off.
I have a small glass pitcher that was meant to hold Tang. It holds about a quart, and that's what I use to make hummingbird syrup (minus the lid) in the microwave. The excess is then stored in the fridge.
Just an idea.
