Steroids ?
I am a hairdresser for over 25 yrs...I am now starting to have some respiratory issues due to my job...fought all winter and spring and part of summer fighting this...one of the meds they used was prednisone...I have never taken this before but knew of the side effects..I gained 7 # in 5 days, and a total of about 12 # alltogether. I went back to Weight Watchers 4 weeks ago and it has ALWAYS worked for me...I have only lost 2 # and I have been walking between 18-20 miles a week. I was told it is very hard to lose the weight when you have used steroids. I am getting sooo frustrated ...and i have been tracking and truly following my ww...any help from anyone, please?????

Are you still on the still on the prednisone? I've done 2 courses of it, 14 days each for my asthma and while I did put on weight in those weeks, it quickly went away when I went off of it. I have not noticed any longterm metabolic effects from it. I take an inhaled steroid now, and haven't had any weight gain issues.

I was wondering if you are still on them also. I've taken them a few times and also lost the weight once I was off. May I ask what type of issues you have? I have done the same job just a few years less than you. Dh is constantly telling me it is not normal to cough so much
I forgot to note my steroid use has been for my back.~July 19 saving goal for event $104/$1000

I am steroid depended. I take 10mgs a day and when the asthma flairs I start out with 60mg for 5 days and work my way back down to 10mgs. Lots of luck with your weight loss,
FernYes I'm out of my mind. It's a dark and scary place in there.

I have never had to take them, but DS has taken them many times. He never had a problem dropping the weight. Then, a couple of years ago he had to take another round and fought like crazy to get the pounds off. He has been known to drop up to 13 pounds in two weeks to make weight for sports. But, it took him about two months to drop the ten he gained from that last round (he lifts weights, runs and does other conditioning exercises four hours/day, five days/week). If he puts on a few pounds now, he has to work extra hard to get them off.
He has tried everything to get the weight off faster, with no success.DD (19)

I dislike prednisone but every winter I have to go a round because I get bronchitis. I've never gained weight on it, I do get hyper and nasty mean when I take it.

Every so often (a couple of times per year) I have to take a few days of prednison for pain issues.
My neurologist told me that while taking the med and for a few days afterwards, the body will hold fluid.*Avril*

No, it has been probably 7-8 weeks since I took them...bronchitis...I was grouchy, and very puffy...but , they did help the cough finally go away...I went thru 4 rounds of antibiotics, then the steroids (15 days) and also a month of Advair....the steroids and the Advair finally cured my cough...I am also using a mask when I spray hairspray, use any kind of chemicals at all in my shop and added an air purifier...My doctor told me it is all due to my job. I get some upper respiratory every winter any more. Usually when i do ww it is fairly steady weight loss...but sure isn't this time. I just wondered how long it stayed in the body...thanks all.

I gained 20 in 3 days about 3 years ago and haven't been able to drop a pound of it. I gain super easy now too. If you find a good answer, let me know!

Don't steriods build muscle? If so, you may just need to work out and tone up the muscles you have.

My daughter has been off prednisone for almost a year now. She took 20-60mg. per day from the ages of 14 to 16. She had the weight gain, developed the moon face, etc. The doctor weened her off very gradually, but I would say that within 6 mos. of her being off of the prednisone, she had dropped most of the weight without really doing anything different. We did watch her sodium consumption both while she was on them and coming off, that seemed to be a huge problem for her. Glad you're off of it. Best wishes to you
