I would say as long as it's a little tiny bit of gloss and some face powder....MAYBE a quick swipe of mascara, or a little natural shadow. I still think 5th grade is too young though.

As long as it's not the thick black eyeliner around the eyes, and dark shadow up to the eyebrow, and 1/4 " lip gloss that I see most 8th and 9th grade girls wearing. Ugh.

Also! Maybe help her look through magazines and The Internet to find examples of looks that she likes. Then you can help her try to emulate those styles instead of her trying to look like a runway model, kwim?

I did not even know that anyone wore black eye liner anymore.

The full face make up that Little Miss put on and washed off was face powder, a near lip color lipstick topped with gloss, a bit of glitter powder on her eye lids and black mascara ( my eye lashes are black)

I think she got the make up idea at the sleep over at the girl's house whose mother sells Mary Kay make up. The mom made them up. She has also checked out of the library a magazine called discovery girls it is for girls 8 and up the girls look her age but definitely look to me like they are wearing what we here would call a full face

Little Miss says she just thought it would be just be fun to wear it. Atleast that is what she told me. I think she just wanted to feel big and prove she was not a " baby" there was somethings said at school about being babied as she was not riding here bike to school (I made her wait until the road construction was less active) and babied because in our family we were bike helmets. The girls that do not wear helmets said they do not have to as they are not babies

Warning: I have NO idea how much this costs, BUT

when I was a pre-teen, my grandparents had a friend who taught beauty classes. We learned our colors and were taught how to put make-up on correctly, learned a little about clothing fashion, etc.

Perhaps something like that would be appropriate and fun?

Again, not sure of the cost. It may be outrageous these days.

I agree with Mommy4ever about the allure of forbidden fruit.

My girls have had makeup they were allowed to wear to school since 4th grade. Sparkly light coloured eyeshadows, mascara, lip gloss, concealer and powder. There were a few days initially where I cringed at their appearance a little bit, but the appeal wore off very quickly. Many of their friends sneak in make-up and wear it every day. My oldest is now in grade 11, so of course, wears make-up most days. My youngest, going into grade 6, wears it to school only a couple of times a month.

It's only makeup. It is easy to wash off and not worth the argument, IMHO. I try to save the arguments for more important things.

Just my $.02 - I hope it gives additional perspective.

Ah, my little diva is so ready for it too. I allow light colored lip gloss and that is it.

Well, as the mother of three boys, I don't know if my opinion matters, lol, but IF I had a daughter in 5th grade, I'd probably only let her wear lip gloss (clear or pink) and maybe put on some loose powder. A full face would be out! Of course I was a tomboy and wouldn't have been caught dead in makeup, so what do I know? I just asked my 5th grade son if the girls in his class wear makeup and he said he didn't know and told me that he didn't even know what mascara is so he didn't know if they were wearing it or not! LOL!

Mine was right arount 10 when she started wearing makeup. It was pretty minimal a couple of light tinted and/or flavored lip gloss, and she had a few light shades of eye shadow and she was actually very good about being light handed with it. I think she may have been in 7th grade when she bumped up to using eyeliner and mascara. I think I can count on one hand the times that she has gone to the trouble to do full make up which were proms and a wedding she was in, she to this day doesn't care for the heaviness of foundaton and lipstick etc.
