Sad, isn't it!?!
I've been told the same thing about dumping cleaning liquid on top of the trash - I've encountered liquid laundry detergent more often than bleach.
Big Lots does the same thing.
The good thing about laundry det is it can be cleaned off.

I believe the issue store have with donating items is that they did donate at one time. People would then research where an item came from (sometimes they still had the tag) and take it back to the store (instead of the donation facility) and try to "return" the item for money or store credit. Don't blame the stores! Blame the cheap, dishonest people who try to get one over on the stores!!
Same with food. Many stores don't donate because of trying to pin them with "food poisoning" lawsuits and such. Don't blame and shame the stores. Blame and shame the sue happy lazies who want the free ride!!
Check the laws of your area too. In most areas it is illegal to dumpster dive in a company bin whether it is posted or not. The bin is on their property, not public property. It is a trespass.

I agree that the issue originated with dishonest people trying to return items for store credit - no doubt about that.
What I don't understand about food donations is this.....
If you were to go to a food pantry, they will have you sign a form agreeing that you won't hold them responsible for illness caused by expired food, etc. They tell you (at least those that I've worked with) that it's common sense, do NOT eat something that smells/looks rancid or damaged. So if the food pantry is covering their tush by having you sign a waiver, wouldn't that also cover all those that donated the food in the first place??
It's still a shame - no matter who you want to blame - that so much useable merchandise goes to the landfill.
Personally, as far as I can find, if it's not posted - all the police can do is tell me to leave - seeing as that's NEVER happened, I won't worry about it until it does.
That's JMO. Opinions may vary.
I'm not ashamed, nor do I operate in super secret squirrel mode, so as far as I'm concerned there is nothing wrong with diving - I wish more people would do it - save this stuff for those that can use it, and keep it out of the landfills!!!Don't Breed or Buy While Shelter Pets Die

I think if it is pulled out legally, i.e. not from a good will bin or other thrift store go for it.
If I toss something usable in my garbage because either didn't have time, energy or patience to try and sell it myself or take to a thrift store then too bad for me if someone else does. It keeps more stuff out of the landfill, someone may get an item they are looking for at a better price than a store and who is to say that the money made isn't for milk/bread, school supplies, or just money to get buy with.

This is an interesting thread. One of my contests is entering sweepstakes, and assuming that I can sell it for a decent amount of money, I do sell items that I win.
Assuming you obtained the items legally, I would have no problem selling items you got from a dumpster. I've never done that, but I have dumpster dived for things we still use in our house. Actually, come to think of it I could probably sell the bread machine I dumpster dived for cash.
There was an interesting article on GetRichSlowly about this a week or so ago - someone who would buy cheap appliances on Craigslist, then turn around and sell them back on Craigslist for a profit. It was very interesting to see the comments.
For kids clothes - and I have a 4 year old - this is my philosophy. For the first few sizes (3 month, 6 month) I tried to sell them but made almost nothing - it wasn't worth my time or effort. Right now I generally donate if I can find someone - most of our friends don't have kids in the right sizes, so that doesn't happen often - and second choice is the SA. And yes, I do take the tax write off. I find that while I'd prefer to donate, I don't want to hang onto stuff for months and months while I find someone. It would be different if we had family/friends who had kids a size or 2 behind DS.Loving wife to DH (8/31/03) and Mommy to Owen Alexander (9/20/06)
