~ Villager Opinions Wanted ~
Honest Opinions Please ~
Do you think it's right, wrong, or indifferent to sell for profit items that were obtained from a dumpster?
TIA!

Indifferent. If I throw something away and someone wants to take it and sell it for a profit, I wouldn't care and I don't think it's wrong. However, if it is taken from a store dumpster, I would find it iffy.

If it's in a dumpster and you find it, sell it.

I don't care if someone rescues something from my trash and makes a profit from it. If I cared, I would have sold it myself.

RE from stores what are the laws in the area - if one is going into a fenced in dumpster that belongs to a store and its signage says its private property or its illegal to do so in your state its wrong .
also if they are finding brand new items in the dumpster with no flaws etc there is a good chance its employee theft they are finding it before the employee or whomever they put it out for gets to it . perfect items do not usually end up in dumpsters .
also if one has to sneak around to prevent from being seen taking it from the dumpster well if you are acting like its wrong to be caught then its probably wrong .
picking up things curbside as long as you are sure its with trash ( ie like new bikes by curbs are often left there by kids) ok with me we have several regulars that go around the nights before trash day take old broken bikes vacuums etc for parts and rebuild into new ones to sell
i have heard of people taking things from a good will dumpster assuming it was trash when its a dumpster used for donations on weekends or closed hours so one needs to be sure of that also .
i also remember years ago someone saying on an ebay board that one way they got stock was they took clothes from bags outside the donations bins at shopping centers etc when the bins were full and bags were left outside them - that to me is wrong also ,*~Debbi~*

Actually, that's far from factual in many, many corporate stores.
Just look back at a few of my posts with pics regarding what I've found in drug store dumpsters -
It's outright depressing how much merchandise is thrown away at the end of each season, perfect condition in packaging that could be donated - should be donated, but isn't. Instead, it's thrown in the garbage. Routinely.
This isn't the case with just one store, or two - but with entire chains of corp stores.Don't Breed or Buy While Shelter Pets Die

To answer my own question;
Personally, I think it's fine to sell items that are pulled out of dumpsters (although I've not done it, that's why I was asking) Given that the dumpsters were not posted with "private property" signs -
I don't "hide" while I poke in the dumpsters - it's not illegal as long as it's not posted.
But seriously, I'm asking because I've got a few boxes of toys (new) that were pulled out of dumpsters after xmas last year, and I held onto them until I figured out what to do with them -
there's a kid's consignment sale in the autumn, and I was considering selling the toys, but have heard mixed opinions from friends about the morality of it - so I thought I'd bring it to a wider audience -Don't Breed or Buy While Shelter Pets Die
