    Start of winter stockpiling

With fall around the corner I have started my winter stockpiling. Always like to have lots of honey on hand during cold and flu season. Was able to pick up 5 pounds for $16. Also purchased some roasted seaweed and fresh ginger.

Since I do not have a car getting to stores is a little complicated so I try to prepare for the winter months when walking can be hazardous.

Anyone else starting to get ready for the winter months?

I'm starting to slowly stockpile stuff for winter. I don't want to have to drag two toddlers out in bad weather or get cold/flu stuff with sick toddlers

yes we have started...on the list is tissues, canned goods, getting the freezer stocked after BBQing all summer and not replacing what we cooked. Could someone post a list that they go by for stockpiling...sometimes i get the brain fog and can't remeber all the items i'd love to keep on hand.TIA!

I need to start on my list. Last winter was bad but we made it through fine because of the stockpile.

We have begun to winter stockpiling too. Still need candles, cold/flu meds, Kleenex, tp, gas for the plow truck and generator. Freezers are full but hunting season is coming so I might have to plug in the other one!

Don't forget drug stores will soon have great specials on cold/flu remedies. We stock up on them for the whole year for next to nothing. With the nearest major stored 25 minutes away and 2 young kids, we find its best to be ready! Rite Aid seems to always have a week or two in fall where a bunch of these things are FREE.

The last few weeks all the flexible spending money has been dedicted to back to school stuff( which I am dreading with every fiber of my being) DH's hours are already slacked off to winter hours so the winter stocking shall begin next week. We are very close to alot of stores so it isnt so much getting snowed in and not being able to get out as it is if we have a bad financial week we will still have everything we need to get by for awhile.

Hey, thanks for the thread. I needed a reminder.

I need to pick up more night time cold meds. I have enough day-time stuff but only a little bit of night time stuff.

I should probably buy some powdered milk also because I know I am low on it. I keep it on hand to make white sauces or gravies.

Oooo... Corn meal! Need some of that also. The guys love corn bread. And, if there is any leftover, they eat it the next morning with syrup on it.

I don't worry as much about stockpiling for winter, because down here, that's usually more pleasant shopping than summer.

But I have just ordered a boatload of tea, actually more than for the winter - at least a year or year and a half. I like a variety, and I mostly get it online, so it pays to get it all at once to consolidate shipping costs. I've been reading more lately that indicates tea has a longer shelf life than is usually believed, and certainly longer than the online tea merchants want you to believe. Especially black teas, which are mostly what I get, so it should be fine.

I usually have plenty of all the foods we eat because I buy most things in bulk or harvest and preserve it myself. Here are some things that I don't like to run out of:

    toilet paper
    dental floss
    toothpaste
    shampoo, body wash
    dog food
bird food (black oil sunflower seed and mixed seed)
batteries (flashlights, head lamps, alarm clock, camera, etc.)
    laundry detergent
    dish detergent
cleaning items (vinegar, baking soda, etc)
anti-freeze, motor oil, chain saw oil & files, etc.
    envelopes, postage stamps
    writing paper, pens
    Vitamin C powder
    Goldenseal powder, other herbal remedies
    Activated charcoal

There are probably more that I can't think of!

I've never stocked up for the winter before, but the suggestions of cold/flu meds, kleenex, and candles are good ideas. I buy generic tissues at Dollar Tree and keep them in the laundry room closet. 6 boxes will take care of the 2 of us for a year.

We will be getting our chicken and beef shortly (both local/ organic from friend of ours)
Will also be freezing garden veggies.
As for tissue and tp and that. I usually do a costco trip with my mom twice a year and we are good!

Really liked reading peoples responses. Helped to get my mind going on what I will need. I know in October or November I will try and stockpile cat food and cat litter. If I have enough to hold me over the winter I will be happy. I purchase large bags and boxes of the stuff and dragging it around on icy areas is no fun.

Will start stockpiling more tissues, cinnamon sticks, dried beans. Clothes wise I am set. Can't wait to use the fleece hood I bought at the thriftstore. Looks like it will be really warm for the walking I like to do.
