I found my best freind
When I was 16 my Best Friend ran away. I never heard from her again.
That was 17 yrs ago and today she found me on Face book. I am so happy to hear from her but I'm also sad to find out that she never told me the worst part of why she left.
I guess we all have to kept our secrets but I wish I had known, I wish I could have helped. It sorta changes everything about my memories with her family.
I'm also sad to know that life since then hasn't been so kind to her.
She has a son who has been missing (taken by his father ) for 4 yrs.
I'm happy to have her back in my life but I feel like now it changes the past.
So weird how you think you know someone , isn't it?

When we're kids we do tend to keep our secrets. The friends I have from back in the day are still shocked at some of the secrets I kept & didn't let anyone in to know what was going on in my home life. They always thought my mom & dad were the "more normal ones" but in reality, my dad was an mean as heck drunk who had no problem beating up on my mom & me as well as a child molester. In short, my dad was a monster, who I hated growing up & never wanted to be around. My life was a living hell. My friends still can't understand why I never said anything, but it wasn't a reflection on OUR friendship, it was a reflection on badly I needed to be able to at least pretend that my life wasn't the nightmare that it really was. My friends were my escape. I'm sure that's how it was with your friend. Being considered "normal" is every kids' need.
Don't beat yourself up for not knowing or for her not saying anything. She probably didn't want you to know just how bad it was and she NEEDED you to be exactly who you were. for you to treat her the way you did. You think that it wouldn't have colored your view of her, but it has now & it would've then. maybe not as drastically as she might have thought, but it was something she needed to help her get out of what she was dealing with. kwim?
Hope that helps

Jessesbride - thank you for sharing. Learning this has not changed my opinion or feelings about her or our friendship, it's changed the way I felt about her dad and the time he spent with us. I thought he was nice and I even kept in contact with her parents after she left, now I know he was a monster.
