The drug trade has increased dramatically around here which leads to more break ins. The next city over has had more murders lately and robberies. We live just out of town and still leave our car doors and house doors unlocked at night. Having a Rottweiler helps though.

Crime in this area skyrocketed almost immediately after hurricane Katrina. New Orleans had the highest crime rate in the nation, and all those criminals moved out into other areas, including ours.

Over the last couple of years, due to police efforts, the crime rate is coming back down.

Because of these factors, I think it's difficult to tell what effect the economy has had on crime in this area.

Isn't it a shame what drugs do to people when they resort to stealing other peoples stuff for money!!! I've noticed it in the paper there are more articles on stuff stolen. There is alot of meth in my area such a terrible drug!

I can't say there's been an increase here. Nothing much increases here except the ferry fares. Crime stays at a low background level. There's a coke dealer down the street, but the neighbours know about him, the cops know about him, and he knows they know.

Nobody minds the pot growers as long as it's for personal use. In fact, when there was a "crime spree" a few years ago (2 or 3 B&Es), it was the pot growers who turned in the culprit, to keep the cops from getting too inquisitive.

Low crime was one of the reasons we moved here.

That's why we moved to a local smaller town, we were paying high rent for a good area, but the crime rate was crawling up all around us.

I worry because we have a lot of medication. Try to keep put away. Keep the doors locked. The cars are also locked. Hubby is real bad to leave tools outside for people to pack off. It is a good neighborhood this does get on my nerves. Crime is up here in the hollers were it takes longer for the police to get there. I do have a big dog.

    Unhappy

Around here you CANNOT EVER leave a house empty, not even for a day. The house we rent out was vacant last year for 2 weeks and we had a terrible time! They stole the copper pipes from the basement and flooded it..smashed windows etc. Around our farm crime doesn't happen (knock on wood) We live on a dead end road where everyone on the road is armed. This is a known fact around the area. I hate guns! But I think we've arrived at a place where we have no choice.

Just yesterday my sis called upset. She had talked to her bil who is dying of cancer. He had just got his medicine and gone in to Walmart to pick up something. Forgot to lock his truck. Someone stole his cancer medicine. Pretty low to do that to a dying man.

Way up. Lots of drug and gang activity, theft. Not in my immediate area, but not that far away either. It's really hard to blame it on the economy though, it seems like that's becoming an easy excuse for bad behavior. We've got one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country and have jobs available, just no one wants to work these jobs (where you actually have to work hard and be drug free). Lots of turnover.
