Default Have you used the gold/diamond buyers for your old jewellery?

Due to allergies I can no longer wear earrings...and I have some old rings that I no longer wear...it's about 25 grams or more of gold...and 4 carats of diamonds...the largest being 1.3 CT pear shape diamond...you think I should chance it? The money made would just be going onto the mortgage. TIA! Janine

Ebay scares me due to possible scammers...same with craigslist or classified ads.

ETA: I weighed it out and I have 25 grams of 10K and 28 grams of 14K...and 5 carats of diamonds

We just moved and I had a bunch of broken gold necklaces (parrots like to yank those) and unmatched gold earrings. Rather than risk the mail-in type, I just took my gold (and silver) to my local, independent jewelry store. They gave me current value of those and took a $10 handling fee, which I thought was more than fair. I walked out with cash in hand. I also was lucky enough to sell it on the highest day for gold/silver, so I was double lucky. Good luck with your sale. I was glad to clean out the jewelry box and made money from items I haven't even thought about in years. I'm sure you'll do equally as well.

ditto this. i would search out a local place that you trust.

i went to our local jewelry store for my monthly wedding rings/earrings (diamond & platinum so they need the TLC) cleaning/inspection, and noticed a sign out front about buying gold. when i asked them about it they told me to just bring anything in i was interested in selling. so the following week i did......made a nice little bundle of cash.....and felt good about it since it was a place i trusted.

I was going to try the compnay recommended by Dave Ramsey and requested their kit...only to discover I have to go to a place that Fed Ex's things and get an envelope myself to ship my items. As I live in a rural area and would have to most likely travel 15+ minutes each way to do this, I just skipped it. I expected an enevelope to come with it! I would rather go somewhere in person to do it if it's requiring that much more gas and effort on my part, so eventually I will.

Same here, call me lazy but I was disappointed it wasn't "drop in and mail" situation so I didn't follow through. At some point I plan to go to a local store and see what they offer me.

I own a coin and jewelry store and I will tell you the mail in ones and the ones that come to local hotels are realy cheap... they only give you 1/2 value and with some much less...
Take it to a local jeweler and also get a couple different quotes to make sure you are not getting cheated.

I have never sold diamonds, but I have used Kay Jewelers Gold Exchange and also Cash for Gold USA (for a watch, since Kay doesn't accept watches). For both, I got a prepaid UPS or FedEx packet and then mailed my items back. I thought I got a fair price the times I have used them.
