We Got Slammed Big-Time...GGgrrr
Don't really know where to start.....I know that my family isn't the only family here that has had a crappy year....but now, after 4 years of serious saving - its all going to be gone & we will once again be facing debt. We had thought of putting the savings toward the principal on our house & now, I'm glad that we didn't.
Our van has been falling apart to the point where it won't pass inspection. It was an unavoidable situation & we had to purchase another vehicle. Although we made a downpayment, we are now facing extra debt ggrr.
Dd has to have to have her palate stretched/dental surgery/braces for a front tooth that will not come down....that will be nearly 5K...(getting a second opinion & quote for that). We are able to pay that in full - no debt.....but no savings either.
All of that hard work....& now we have to start all over - I feel like a hamster in a wheel.

I'm so sorry, it hurts when you work so hard to save your money only to lose it. Hopefully you'll be able to pay down the new vehicle and start saving again soon. HUGS to you!

I know it kills you to have to use the money you saved, but if you look at it, the car would have broken down and your daughter would have needed dental work even if you HADN'T saved that money. So rather than thinking you are a hamster in a wheel, give yourself a HUGE pat on the back that you had the money set aside to handle these two big emergencies at the same time, and still end up with very little extra debt in the process. It would have been so much worse if you had not saved the money!
I have twice managed to get a large amount of money saved up, and twice have had to use it for an emergency (new roof and new well). I know your pain. I cried when I had to give up the money on the roof, because it was the first time I had felt I was actually making progress on my EF - first time I had over $1,000 in there. But the alternative would have been taking out more on the HELOC, which would have put me that much further behind in my goal of being debt free.
You won't feel good about it right now, but in a few months, you will be SO glad you had that money when you needed it, and you'll be proud of yourself for all the hard work you had to do in order to save it. I, for one, will congratulate you now and say "good job!"DH aka Mad Hen

When it rains it pours. I am so sorry for your trouble. I'm glad that you at the least had some money to look after your daughter's surgery.
It truly BITES about the vehicle. I had to get a new vehicle for the same reason recently. I hope, at the least your new vehicle brings you some enjoyment!

Totally agree with MH. You certainly have every right to be POed about the situations, but you are so much stronger than you were years ago. It seems that this is the rhythm of life - nothing is a straight line to anywhere anymore, and your success line is still going in the right direction and getting stronger - this is one of those major hits. Be proud of what you've accomplished!!

If you got a good rate on your van payments, that's a plus.
If you can pay in installments, (interest free ?), for your daughter's teeth, that's a plus, too.
Take heart, I'm a hamster, too

I know that you are starting again but that was what the money is for. Your daughter will have a beautiful confident smile that will last a lifetime. Your family will have a dependable vehicle for years. You saved the money once and know how to do it. it will not be easy but you will build your savings back. Hugs to you.

Im sorry you have to deal with this. My DD needed to have the surgery, stretching, etc as well when we did the braces. Some of the surgery was covered under our medical insurance. The Oral Surgeon's staff was very helpful with the insurance. You might want to check with them and see if there is anything covered under the medical.

I so feel your pain. Turns out we had some serious structual damage on our garage had to move the walls rebrace it and rebeam it if we didnt it would have collapsed as a result we now have to reshingle the roof very expensive and not planned for I know how you feel but at least you had the funds to do what you needed to do.

Thank goodness you have the money to cover it though! Be proud of that! I know that it hurts to spend it. Dh and I have been in that same rotten situation many times too! It really bites! I'm a hamster too!

we can pay our orthodontist monthly - we put down 800 i think and then for two years paid 150 interest free if we sign up with their automatic payments .
our dental insurance covered about 1000 of it

Are there dental/orthodontic schools in your area where you could get the work done, discounted, by students but fully supervised by fully qualified dentists/orthodontists/oral surgeons?

I'm a hamster too and am glad to see other hamsters here spinning their wheels so I don't feel so alone!
Good work saving up, though, as others have said it's so much better to have it and lose it than to never have it and go deeper into debt.
