Angry My story for the week...

So today I went and deposited my largest check from work this year.. Over $400.00...YAY!!! I withdrew $40.00, and proceeded to get $20.00 in gas, and $7.19 at Ross (with my discount) for dd who needed socks and wanted a small toy. Decided to treat the oldest two to lunch and went to Taco Bell and my card was declined. ??? Not sure what that is about, but I went to the bank and it said "Insufficient Funds"--???????? So oldest DD checked on her phone and lo and behold we had over $1,000.00 withdrawn from ALL our accounts-mine, DH and oldest DD's...

We owe state taxes and planned on paying them current on next check, knowing we had to pay. A couple of weeks ago (not even 30 days ago) we got a letter stating INTENT to garnish, not an actual garnishment, which also stated we had 45 days to respond to it. They took a one time lump sum out of our bank account and the rest we can pay over the next few months... I am sorry but now we have ZERO money for the next week. NOTHING, NADA, ZILCH!!! I have enough food in the pantry, and plenty of gas for work and such, but nothing else. I really need milk, but don't have money for it. This is so aggrevating!!

My kids for the first time in any of their lives are very scared we don't have any money. Part of me is happy they understand it can be gone in a blink of an eye, and the other part of me hates that they have to see this part of it. I don't remember the last time that I had a zero balance in all our accounts. Had I known I would have just cashed my check. Thank you STATE OF OREGON!!! I know it is my debt to pay, but make it a little clearer and if you didn't mean what you said in the letter, then just send the garnishment stating you were doing it. Not saying we didn't owe it, but sheeesh, give us a break...

I don't get it. How could they garnish your daughter's account? Is it tied to yours or separate? In either case, I thought only the person responsible for the tax bill could be garnished. If they only sent a letter with the intent to garnish and 45 day response time then I would get copies of everything and complain!

Also, how did the $360 go down the hole? Did the garnishment come out after you deposited? Or did they take a lump sum that your $360 filled the hole to $0? Or are they taking everything as it comes in until they get $1000?

All of these are questions you should be asking them and the bank, in a polite but complaining voice!

They may have taken the money out of dd's account if your name is on the account too.

I learned this the hard way:
My dd bought an ipod touch with $20.00 in her bank account, the ipod was $499.99. Everyone knows what happened to the account. I told dd she need to put cash into the account until she caught it up, it was not my responsibility.

Next thing I know $600.00+ was taken out of my personal account to bring her account current. I drove her a** up to the bank and made her close the account.

My name is not on either of my kid's accounts. If they decide to screw them up it becomes your problem. I will not co-sign anything either.

i hope you mean an ipad for 499 an ipod touch is only about 200
but where do you bank they let her buy it in the first place is she didnt have enough in her acct ??? should have come up denied due to insufficient funds .

OP so sorry this happened - maybe the letter of intent was from the date the letter was typed up not the day it was recieved .?

When I got my check today I deposited it and during the same transaction I was able to get 40.00.. About a half hour later all our accounts had been emptied.

Our daughter is tied to DH account because she is still a minor and couldn't get her own acct yet-at least when she was 15 when we opened the acct for her. So hers is tied to DH and it was his that was garnished...

We are going over everything. I even got a certified letter 2 days ago stating they would just take it from federal next year and it states we had 60 days to pay from the date of notice which was 10/11......

I am very confused~~~ to say the least.

I don't think the IRS has anything to do with it in this case because it's state taxes, not federal taxes.

In regards to the garnishment, I think that's actually standard operating procedure. They don't give you any warning because you'd empty your accounts. Still if they gave you a deadline to pay it and then took the money from your accounts before then, that's just not right. At least you have it paid, though, right?

    I'm sorry this has happened.

Well that just sucks. I guess the Government thinks no one is hurting at the moment for money. Not like your refused to pay it. How did they get your personal account info? My bank says no one even the Government can't get into your account without prior consent from the person that owns the account.. They have to notify you in writing. Maybe not all states or banks are the say.

A friend of ours recently ended up spending a night in JAIL because of an unpaid bill. So, yes, strange things can and do happen. The sad thing for them is that they had already paid it- the powers that be just had not canceled the "warrent" for the outstanding debt. It stunk and cost them more money in the long run- they had to bail out, etc. Scary stuff.

i am so sorry that happened ! It happened to me in 2008 with the state of Virginia, but they went for my paycheck. Thankfully i got to keep a few hundred out of each (every two weeks) I went ahead and borrowed a $1000 from my 401k ( i have since paid back in full) and paid that months and the next ahead of time.It was difficult and right before christmas. I hope you get through it ok.
