What do you talk about around your dinner table?
I have always wondered what other families talk about around the dinner table.

DH's work, the news, my day, what we're doing that evening, what weekend plans we have, what needs to be done around the house, funny stuff we read or saw...

The rule at our house is it must be pleasant. Nothing negative, NO NEWS!!! No money worries. The TV must be off. Etc.
Supper always begins with grace, and a remembrance of those less fortunate than ourselves. At first everyone is quiet with eating, if the meal's really good soon they'll say something about it. We'll talk about the recipe, DH might ask me how it was cooked. We'll talk about our blessings that day, things that made us happy, upcoming family things like choir, plays, church suppers, etc. The weather comes up.
Especially if it's going to snow. Kids will make requests for hot chocolate if it's supposed to snow. I also get supper requests that go something like this, You know what I've been hungry for lately?

*Whatever sport DS is currently playing (before DD left for college, we also talked about her sports as well.) Right now we are in the final weeks of HS football so there is lots of talk about plays, players, bad calls, good calls, last week's game, next week's game, etc...In two weeks wrestling and indoor track & field start up so our conversations will transition to throwing a shot put, making weight for wrestling, upcoming meets and matches, etc...
*DS and DH are very conservative and love a good political debate. We have lots of talks about politics, politicians, world events, new laws, etc...
*School and grades
*Good old fashion gossip. Yep, I am not too proud to say that we enjoy a dose of family, school or community gossip.
It really varies. It may be a serious night where we talk important stuff, it may be a silly goof off night where we joke on each other or somewhere in between. There are no rules for what we talk about. As long as our teens are talking and sharing, we are happy.DD (19)

When DD was in high school, Field Hockey, Winter Track and Spring Track dominated most conversation and how school was gonig etc.
Hubby and I are by ourselves now so we eat in the living room watching tv. Conversation could range from what we are watching to a couple of his family members trials and tribuations.

It's just DH and I. We tend to be really hungry when we eat (our "lunch" is served when DH gets home from work!! and then we eat dinner around 10:30pm) so we actually don't talk much at first!
Then, about our days, the news, whatever's going on, stuff we want to do / need to do (weekend plans, work around the home, that sort of thing) oh and a little light GOSSIP. We love to gossip haha. Just for fun, nothing mean.

~I talk and they listen. Getting anyone else to converse is just like pulling teeth. Apparently the kids inherited their table talking ways from my hubby's side and not mine.
My family's table conversation was the best. Thought provoking, funny and never dull. Maybe my kids will catch on more as they get older. ~~Constance

You know, when DD#1 first met her now DH, he couldn't stand our dinner table conversations. He grew up in a very politically astute family and there were always political debates over the supper table. We were much more sedate.
Our approach was to say grace, and then ask about each other's day, talk about plans for the evening/future, maybe tell a good joke or two. Sometimes we did discuss news. Now, with just DH and I, we often discuss the American news. DH is an ex-American and has an insider view I just don't get as a Canadian. It's very interesting to hear. Sometimes we discuss renovations too.2012 Challenges

I'm very blessed to still be able to sit down to supper every afternoon with my dh, ds, and dd. After the blessing we talk about our day and by the end we are usually rolling laughing. My ds usually cracks us up. He always has something funny to tell about his day.
