And if working the oilfields doesn't sound like your kind of work...

3 or 4 years ago a paper mill closed down in our town, with a loss of hundreds of jobs. One was my friend's husband, so that's what they did. They packed up the kids, put the house up for sale and moved to North Dakota. He doesn't work in the oil fields, but used the displaced worker money to work on an advanced degree, while he and his wife were able to find jobs.

They miss their friends and family here, but North Dakota has been a great transitional period for them, even if they don't decide to stay there permanantly.

We will consider it if my husband loses his job. I prefer warm weather and less wind, but you do what you have to do, I guess.

I'm from N. D. They say the oil boom will last another 20 years before they cap it again. They have very little housing the men live in man camps, under bridges, and other places. Because of all these extra people and money everything cost more then what it should. If you are going to move there check out housing and the costs of food and other things.

Yes I'm out of my mind. It's a dark and scary place in there.

Dh has a few friends working there now. Amazing what they are paying for a non union even beginner driver / truck driver. 80k -110K depending on the rig driven.

One guy told us he is paying 700 a month to park his camper! He also said Mc D's is paying $19 an hour due to the labor shortage.

If we were 20 years younger and didnt have a kid in high school we would go have an adventure!

I have a cousin who is up there right now. His family is still here because he works 6 months on and 6 months off. Of course the 6 on seems to be 24/7 from the description of his shifts (probably not really) but it is helping his family out.

He is very hardworking and has tried all sorts of businesses. He is willing to do what it takes to keep his family afloat and get out of debt so when white-collar doesn't pay, he drives trucks or does something else that pays.

ND has been a life saver for them.

That's right, my friend also said finding housing was a problem. But she also said many churches were trying to help with that.

In this economy, IMO that's the only attitude that makes sense if your family is in need.

We certainly don't think that any option is off the table, including pulling up stakes and moving across the U.S.. The tripping up factor as a family is the housing, but we will be keeping a close eye on how things are progressing in North Dakota.

Back in the 70's 3 of my Uncles moved to different states to work. Now they left the state for real jobs, the kind that you can live off the wages. Moving lock, stock and barrel for anything less would be crazy. But it sure seems like if you've got a trade North Dakota might be your saving grace.
