I like the concept...though this pic must be from another year since this November the Friday after is the 25th. I give them a lot of credit for doing this. It is nice...even though I hate that store and have never shopped there.

I am not a big Nordstroms shopper. Mainly because i cannot afford the store at all!! But I love this idea. Years ago i saw a gorgeous shirt i wanted to get my husband and i was all excited until i saw it was $2 or 300! Yikes! I was seriously bummed though, he would of loved it. Oh well, good for them for not giving into the hype.
I ran my life into a ditch big time and i am tired of struggling, i need a change and i need it now. Trying to change past behaviors so they are not the indicator of future behavior. That is why i am here...

I guess I should say it is not the store I hate...but the general feel from many of the personnel and shoppers. Not all...but many. It used to be a better then you nose in the air kind of place many years ago. Not sure what it is like now....I won't shop there and have not gone into one in years. They also used to be quite overpriced on things since they were riding on their name back in the day.

Yes, but when I find Nordstrom items at the thrift store, I know they're swanky!

I too hope more stores follow suit, One holiday at a time please & enough with Christmas starting in September. Come on!
Only way it will happen though is if we the consumer let them know we want it this way.
I do not go to the big holiday sales and feel bad for the retail sales people that have to be forced to work ever early hours so they can beat the competition for our dollars. This is mostly consumer driven and I for one won't be a part of it. It starts with me.

I found this in a blog about Nordstrom and Christmas decorating

    The date in 12 2009

"This year is the 108th year that Nordstrom has waited until Black Friday to decorate."

That makes this it's 110th year waiting to decorate.

But yet a window display of their in October looked like this and what they had to say about it

as i said previously, i am hapy that nordie's has chosen to hold off on the xmas thing.....but, i think that so many have a huge misconception about the store itself (IMHO)...yes, there are plenty pricey stuff in the store, but, if you really look, you will find good quality clothing and at affordable prices...that is if you llike good premium denim and are willing to shell out one time so that you do not have to keep rebuying denim often...imo....also, their clearance racks just rock! you have to dig, but, dig and walk out oh so happy! but, again, this is all my own opinion.....hoping i did not offend anyone

I shopped at Nordstroms through my 20s (when I had a lot more money and a lot less sense than I have now). The clothes and shoes and accessories and makeup... all of them are nice. It was my "first stop" store whenever I needed anything, as I lived pretty close by.

Now, I wouldn't dare step inside, even if they were having a sale.

I did appreciate that after I bought a pair of pearl earrings there, they sent me a hand-written thank you card in the mail, and I later got personalized cards from them at other times as well.

As for the decorating for Christmas - nice idea, but if I read it right, they have no decorations on the day before Thanksgiving, but when the doors open on Black Friday, the decorations are up. So nice of them to say "we're closed on Thanksgiving" so that their employees can enjoy the holiday with their families (implied) when actually the stores will be closed but full of employees DECORATING all day long!!

Actually greekislandgirl, a friend of mine used to work at nordstrom last year. This is their policy. They decorate the evening before thanksgiving.

    Per her email:
It's voluntary. Employees who want to set up come in the evening/night before Thanksgiving and decorate the stores. They get paid for the job, get refreshments (catered), and are hopefully dismissed before midnight. Nordstrom does not make their employees work on the holiday.
    It is what it is.
